Good readers summarize Good readers summarize. As they read, they pause to sum up the important ideas or events. This helps them remember the information. As you read a story, note the main events. After you read, ask yourself what the main events were and in what order they occurred.

because it includes the Which is a good summary of the story Miss Franny told about the bear? Once, when Miss Franny was a young librarian, a bear walked into her library. She threw a book at it and the bear left with the book. Florida was wild and woolly. Franny was reading a book. She smelled a bear. The bear was in the library. This is a good summary because it includes the main events in Miss Franny’s story.

Which is a good summary of the beginning of Because of Winn-Dixie? Opal has moved to Florida. She convinces her dad who is a preacher to let her keep Winn-Dixie. He is afraid of storms. Opal and her father have recently moved to a Naomi. Soon after they arrive, Opal rescues a big, scruffy dog. She names him Winn- Dixie, after the grocery store where she found him. She convinces her dad to let her keep him. This is a good summary because it includes the main events from the beginning of the book. The other summary left out some main events and included some small details.

Which is a good summary of how Miss Franny and Opal became friends? Opal teaches Winn-Dixie to stand on his hind legs and look through the window at her while she is in the library. Miss Franny mistakes Winn-Dixie for a bear. Miss Franny tells her own bear story. She and Opal become friends. Miss Franny is a tiny, old librarian. Opal spends many hours reading in her library. The library is named Herman W. Block Memorial Library. Miss Franny likes to recommend books to Opal. That is how they become friends. While the other summary included things that happened in the story, it left out the important bond that occurred because of Miss Franny mistaking Winn-Dixie for a bear.
