WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT? Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.

DEFINITION BY BRUNDTLAND COMMISSION Sustainable development is defined as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

SCOPE AND DEFINITION A representation of sustainability showing how both economy and society are constrained by environmental limits

Inter relation of the facets of SD

THERE ARE FOUR PILLARS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THERE ARE FOUR PILLARS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SOCIAL ECONOMICAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND THE FOURTH BEING CULTURAL

CULTURAL ASPECT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (UNESCO, 2001) elaborates the concept by stating that "...cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature”; it becomes “one of the roots of development understood not simply in terms of economic growth, but also as a means to achieve a more satisfactory intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual existence". In this vision, cultural diversity is the fourth policy area of sustainable development.UNESCO

AGENDA 21 Clearly identified information, integration, and participation as key building blocks to achieve SD It emphasizes that in sustainable development everyone is a user and provider of information Broad public participation in decision making is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving sustainable development.

Problems in achieving SD Green development is unattainable A cutting edge treatment plant with extremely high maintenance costs may not be sustainable in regions of the world with fewer financial resources. An environmentally ideal plant that is shut down due to bankruptcy is obviously less sustainable than one that is maintainable by the community, even if it is somewhat less effective from an environmental standpoint.

SD is said to set limits on the developing world. While current first world countries polluted significantly during their development, the same countries encourage third world countries to reduce pollution, which sometimes impedes growth. Some consider that the implementation of sustainable development would mean a reversion to pre-modern lifestyles

Environmental sustainability Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal-seeking behavior.

Consumption of renewable resources State of environment Sustainability More than nature's ability to replenish Environmental degradation Not sustainable Equal to nature's ability to replenish Environmental equilibrium Steady state Less than nature's ability to replenish Environmental renewal Environmentally sustainable

NEED FOR SD All major natural resources in the country are in grave danger of irreparable damage. A society cannot survive if its natural resources are rendered unfit for use by its people. The only hope of salvaging this grave situation is aware that they need to the young by making them proactively begin to protect the environment they will inherit. Science and Technology can help in a limited way but cannot deliver it.

The moral and ethical education for changing people’s attitude To protect children living in polluted regions, environmental education represents a relevant means of prevention It is need for the hour to propose the environmental education with the essential elements of moral philosophy. For conceptual change

HOW TO ACHIEVE SD ? Minimize the use of non-renewable energy sources by creating a portfolio approach to energy use which would include: on-site energy production (e.g., Photovoltaic), purchasing local renewable energy; purchasing ”green” power from the grid, and conservation measures that reduce energy consumption. Minimize greenhouse gas emissions on available facilities, and incorporate fuel-efficient vehicles and practices into the vehicles. Promote alternate means and accessible modes of transportation to and fro to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Minimize the amount of generated waste through an aggressive recycling program for all products which can be diverted from the landfill; toward this end, evaluate life cycles of products to determine how they will be disposed of at the end of their useful life. Utilize the group purchasing power to reduce packaging and to purchase green products. Establish and implement communications strategies that involve the active participation of all in understanding and promoting these values and practices.

ISO The ISO environmental management standards exist to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and (c) continually improve in the above.

HOW TO AQUIRE ISO 14000? ISO is similar to ISO 9000 quality management in that both pertain to the process of how a product is produced, rather than to the product itself. As with ISO 9000, certification is performed by third-party organizations rather than being awarded by ISO directly.
