Towards a shared platform of scientific publications in New Caledonia: the example of “Univers NC” an OAI-PMH compliant common open archive Isabelle Gasser (IRD Nouméa) & David Aymonin (UNC) 40th IAMSLIC Conference, Forty Years of Sailing : Connecting Islands in a Digital World, Noumea, New Caledonia, Sept All the scientific publications about, from, by New Caledonia

Univers NC Prototype portal to open archive collections, created in March 2013  Harvests interoperable databases and shares metadata produced by scientific partners, using appropriate technologies (OAI-PMH)

Univers NC : aims Make New Caledonia research more visible and easy to find through the web, from a unique entry point Build up a platform following international standards and well indexed in search engines Contribute to successful exploitation of research results carried out by New Caledonia scientists Preserve the records and memory of scientific work done in NC, on NC and from researchers and institutions based in NC Include New Caledonia in the digital archives and scientific publications global movement on the web

Univers NC : current contents Bibliographic references of all kind of scientific publications (articles, books, conference proceedings, preprints, PhD theses, students works, etc.) and podcasts If available, full-text documents (controlled or free access) IFREMER Archimer IRD Horizon / Pleins Textes SPC FAME Digital Library UNC podcasts

Univers NC : metadata providers 1. Institutions settled in New Caledonia, already involved IRD (formerly Orstom) Ifremer Secretariat of the Pacific Community University of New Caledonia Local authorities and Nickel Mining industries Vale INCO, South Province of NC  through ŒIL Government of NC services, DIMENC  through CNRT 2. Institutions settled in New Caledonia, yet to come Institut Agronomique néo-Calédonien (IAC) Institut Pasteur de NC Centre hospitalier territorial de NC Tjibaou Cultural centre, the North and Loyalty Islands Provinces, …

Univers NC : future metadata providers 3. International repositories and sources  Union catalogue of French universities (Sudoc, Theses.fr)  French national Library (BNF Opale)  French national OA platform (HAL)  Specialized databases  International catalogues

Technical details A technical platform based on the open source software ori-oai v 1.7: still to be changed...

Assessment of our platform In 2009, we chose ORI-OAI to manage the University IR We were absolute beginners In 2012, we installed an upgrade, but still Weak import and export Poor management of structured metadata formats No deduplication tool Not easy to develop and maintain In 2013, we installed Univers NC Search interface OK OAI-PMH harvesting OK Today: ++ strong experience -- poor means We can choose wisely a better tool, with precise specifications among many good tools : Dspace, Eprints, Islandora, HAL 3.0

Our vision for the near future “Set up a national Open Archive for New Caledonia, harvesting and merging as automatically as possible data from several sources, taking advantage of the Web 3.0 technologies and linked data”

Next steps More partners convinced to provide data Through the Caledonian consortium of research institutions  CRESICA Offices of Provinces and Government of New Caledonia More functionalities and data to be added Automatic enrichment of bibliographic records DOI when missing PDF files, whenever we get the DOI audience level Semi automatic deduplication of bibliographic records harvested Data sets management Linking with directories of researchers, using ISNI, ORCID and else Using quality open medata sources GoKB and KB+

Discussion Is there anybody in the audience who can share his knowledge and / or experience on: record deduplication techniques and tools? GOKB services and metadata availability? Thank you very much!
