Making the Case for Curation: The Practical Experiment of DSpace Managing Digital Assets February 5-6, 2005 Charleston, SC Ann J. Wolpert, Director of Libraries Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Scholarly research and teaching are in transition. Publication is only one part of the network- enabled “system” of communication Disciplines are experimenting Traditional outlets are constrained “Impact” – not impact factor - is still the critical success factor Required responsibilities not yet defined

Increasing amounts of scholarly output have no print analog. Local educational and research resources are increasingly digital in format. Faculty are terrible system administrators. Every institution has its own culture and needs; just ask and listen. The low-hanging fruit is there for the picking.

To support a new model, new tools are required. To share innovation and information To assure affordability and access To build and preserve “the record” in new formats To sustain teaching using new tools and techniques To protect institutional investments

DSpace was designed for broad adoption. Broad vs specialized or deep Open Source (code is free) Federation model Preservation archive Agnostic as to content 150 repositories in use worldwide, 6000+ copies of the code downloaded

DSpace Offerings Large-scale, stable, managed long-term storage Support for range of digital formats Easy-to-use submission process Persistent network identifiers Access control Search and delivery interface

Initially imagined content included Preprints, articles Technical Reports Working Papers Conference Papers E-theses Datasets –statistical, geospatial, matlab, etc. Images –visual, scientific, etc. Audio files Video files Learning Objects Reformatted digital library collections

Operational versions reflect the needs and interests of the host. Student portfolios Theses and dissertations Preprints Digitized library collections Working papers Technical reports Databases Faculty papers/archives University press works Institutional “branding” is a key driver

Institutional Repositories like DSpace offer part of the solution A tool for faculty and institutions More cost effective than fragmentation Increases institutional visibility Gratifies trustees and alumni Cumulative and perpetual Open and interoperable

Libraries and scholars develop new relationships around Repository services “Inside out” vs “Outside in” challenges assumptions Faculty Acceptance –Valuing and trusting an institutional archive –Different disciplines have different cultures –Copyright/IP opinions and policies Library Culture –Policies –Operations

Why Libraries? Expertise –Large-scale collection management Assessment/collection policies Preservation –Metadata –Solid business practices Commitment and reputation –Long time frames –Mission scope –Trusted relationships
