 Horror films are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread, alarm, to invoke our hidden worst fears often in a terrifying shocking finale. Horror films effectively centre on the dark side of life, the forbidden, strange and alarming events. They deal with our fears, nightmares, vulnerability, alienation, our fear of the unknown, our fear of death

 Usually gothic in style. Set in spooky mansions, castles, dark and shadowy places. The main characters were usually supernatural or grotesque creatures, vampires, demons, madmen, devils, ghosts, monsters, mad scientists or werewolves who were always evil.

 Concept of Horror changes and is now found in the dark shadow of the human soul.  The main character within a horror movie doesn’t necessarily need to look scary to be scary. (Psycho, Misery, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal).  Main characters tend to have some sort of psychological problems or a particular event has caused them to behave the way they do. 

 Characters have something that makes them unique or frightening.
