Oxlip+ : a portal to online resources Thanks for the Word Cloud to /. /

What does it cover? Online resources / databases –Collections of full text articles, papers, e-journals... –Indexing / Abstracting / Tables of Contents services – collections of references –Library catalogues Individual e-Journals

What does it do? Allows you to find databases / e-journals by searching and browsing Provides access to all online resources / e-journals from off campus Some online resources can be searched simultaneously from within Oxlip+ MyResearch offers storage / personalisation

Limitations Oxlip+ is one portal among many Mainly subscription resources Other portals / search engines Good quality (mainly free) web resources –British –Many others….

Using Oxlip+ to find and access Online Resources

Logging in Log in When you are off campus To use “My Research” Don’t forget to log off and to close you internet browser when you are using a public computer

Oxlip+ has four main options Find database (e.g. collections of articles, datasets etc) Find e-Journal: Find individual journals by journal title CrossSearch – allows you to search some databases simultaneously from within Oxlip+ My Research – your personal storage area on Oxlip+.

Find database Search by title or browse the A-Z of titles. Only really suitable if you know the name of the database you wish to use already! Browse databases by subject Search database by vendor/publisher or by searching for keywords (“any word”) in the database description

Find Database: Browsing subjects A-Z of subjects Pick a subject or type of resource Pick a sub-category Click “Go”

Find Database: Browsing subjects To see a little more information about all the resources choose “Detailed view” To connect to a database click on the title Click on “i” to see full information including coverage information, search tips, tutorials and guides etc

Find Database: More browsing Icons – if you see an icon use the “Legend” on the right to find out what it means Magnifier – shows that the resource can be searched from within Oxlip+ (and CrossSearched) Next page

Note on language dictionaries Bilingual –Oxford reference online (via Oxlip+) (French, German, Spanish, Italian) – Monolingual French –Centre nationel de ressources textuelles et German –

Brief detour to the MLA… Keywords searches journal article titles and subjects (not author names).

Find e-journal: other search options XXX The other search options within “Find e-Journal” are unreliable

Search tips Check “help”, “tips”, “examples” What are the keywords for your subject? –Are there any synonyms? –Are there any alternative spellings? –Which words are likely to be used in article titles / abstracts? –If you get too many results – can you refine your search? –If you get too few results – what are the broader terms?

Use Connectors / Boolean logic SpainCivil War Spain AND “Civil War” returns articles including both words ConflictWar War OR Conflict returns articles including one word or the other or both Civil WarSpain Civil War Not Spain returns articles including the phrase “Civil War” but only if the word Spain isn’t included “ ” searches for an exact phrase e.g. “United States” “Spanish Civil War” “War and Peace”
