Using Examples

Using examples is one of the most common strategies to support the topic sentence or the main idea. When you give examples, keep these in mind: 1. Examples must be proper and clear. 2. Examples may be subjective, such as personal experiences. 3. Examples may be objective, such as facts, statistics from scientific reports, information from any survey and quotation from experts.

You may use these transitional expressions to connect the examples you give: for example/instance for one thing also besides in addition what’s more/worse worse still first, second, etc. finally

Examples: 1. Taiwan is by no means alone in its water problems. Today, many countries face a serious water shortage, and the problem will only get worse. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) predicts that by 2025, severe water shortages will affect 2 to 3 billion people.

2. Current water sources can be made more efficient. To begin with, dredging reservoirs can increase their capacity. Desalination of ocean water is another option. Also, cleaning up polluted rivers and lakes can provide more usable water.

Exercise A: Combine the following sentences into a paragraph. Use proper transitional expressions if necessary. 1. Topic sentence: Climate change can be a cause of water scarcity. Example: Rainfall in Taiwan from January to April in 2002 was only 30 percent of normal. Concluding sentence: As a result, there was a severe drought in Taiwan.

2. Topic sentence: Different cultures have different ways to show friendship. Examples: 1. Most Americans kiss and hug each other. Examples: 2. Eskimos rub noses. Examples: 3. The Chinese smile and shake hands. ___________________________________

Exercise B: Write a paragraph by using examples to support the topic sentence. Topic sentence: Conservation of water is by no means difficult. ____________________________________________________________________________
