Since 1948 its function has been to support the state of Israel.  Persecution: the subjecting of a race or group of people to cruel or unfair treatment, example: because of their ethnic origin or religious beliefs  Israel: Modern state of Israel was established in 1948 it was established as a place for the Jews to go after WW2.
