Composite Pavements National Pooled Fund TPF-5(149) Task 1 Update Mihai Marasteanu

Task 1 - Development of Information on Composite Pavements  Description –The project team will assess the state of practice and knowledge for the design and construction of composite pavement systems. The literature review will include projects and studies within the U.S. and foreign countries  Duration –Task runs from month 1 to month 12  Deliverables –A task report summarizing the literature review for new composite pavements and asphalt overlays of old concrete pavements

Task 1 - Development of Information on Composite Pavements  The review of the state of practice will focus on two main issues: –Summarizing the design and construction guidelines –Identifying test sections or field projects to determine performance histories  Although the main focus is on new composite pavements, the literature review will also cover asphalt overlays of old concrete pavements  Based on the literature review, the research team will identify where the design and construction guidelines can be improved

Task 1 – Current Status  A draft literature review is almost complete –History and Distresses of Composite Pavements –Current Rehabilitation Construction Practices Fractured Slab Approach Crack and Seat, Break and Seat Rubblization Interlayers, Grids and Fabrics Interlayer Stress Absorbing Composite Bonding Cold in Place Recycling Bituminous Saw Cuts (Saw and Seal) Modified Binders Ultra Thin Bonded Wearing Course Drainage Considerations

Task 1 – Current Status –Composite Pavements as New Construction Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) Porous Asphalt on CRCP –Design & Modeling of AC Overlays on PCC Pavements Existing Condition Assessment Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Utilizing the Finite Element Method Caltrans Overlay Design Governed by Reflective Cracking Mechanistic Empirical Design of Rubblized and Crack and Seated PCC Pavements AASHTO Design Guide 2002 M-E PDG Design Guide Modeling and Predicting Reflective Cracking

Task 1 – Current Status –Performance and Rehabilitation of Composite Pavements Performance & Rehabilitation Survival of 1st, 2nd, 3rd AC/PCC Overlays –Conclusions and Recommendations –References – a total of 145 references –Appendix with 50 pages of annotated bibliography  It is expected that the first component of the literature review will be completed by the beginning of February, 2009
