Government and Politics South African Government and Politics By: John, Teddy, Tommy, and Duncan South Africa began as a country inhabited by several indigenous tribes, such as the Zulu until around the 16th century, when Europeans began to round the Cape of Good Hope en route to Asia. Soon, in 1652 Jan Van Riebeeck created a permanent settlement near present-day Cape Town, called Table Bay. At first, the Dutch thought the settlement could be used for trade but because of local people, they turned it into a country.

Government and Politics Today, South Africa has recently stopped practice of apartheid, or separation of whites and blacks. For a long time the country was ruled by white people. Only white people could vote. In 1912 African leaders came together to work for equal rights. They were called the African National Congress. In 1960 it was banned. In 1962 Nelson Mandela, one of the leaders of the A.N.C., was sentenced for life in prison. He got out in 27 years and became the President of South Africa.
