GROWING MICHIGAN By: Leah, Stephen, and Tess

The Toledo war The Toledo War was a big part of Michigan’s history  The Toledo War was not like a war with guns; It’s just that Michigan and Ohio both wanted it.  The Toledo War was as important to Michigan as it was for Ohio winning Toledo.  It slowed down Michigan from becoming a state.  There was a compromise. Congress was part of Michigan. proposed that Michigan had to give up the Toledo strip.  The Toledo strip was the piece of paper that Michigan used to own to show that Toledo belonged to them.

Becoming a state Becoming a state was hard for Michigan.  The first governor was Stevens T. Mason and on January 26 th 1837, Michigan became a state!  When Stevens T. Mason returned home from Toledo, Ohio Andrew Jackson fired him as governor.  People come to Michigan for different reasons one is for jobs. Everyone needs some money! Another is for food. The third one is for shelter.

Natural resources A big natural resource in Michigan was copper.  Douglass Houghtington visited the upper peninsula. However, he warned that the red metal will be hard to mine.  Native Americans had used copper from the area for thousands of years, but no one had tried to mine the copper daily. But that soon changed.  A few after Houghtingtons report had been published, hundreds of people to the Keweenaw to “strike it rich” in America’s first mineral boom.   Quick Question :

The Soo Locks The Soo Locks was a man made water way!  The steamer Illinois became the first boat to past through the Soo locks on June 18 th,  All though the Soo locks was hard to build, they soon played an important role in America’s industrial growth.  Michiganians argued it would benefit both Michigan and the nation.  It works by one door going down and then the boat goes through. After that, the same door goes up. Then, the water goes to the same level of the other side of the door and the boat enters the area.
