Aspects we will look at

Notes # 1 The Great Depression Part 1 In the U.S. After America’s great victory in World War I our nation was at the top. Americans were rich, well fed, our country was powerful, when many industrial nations (Britain, France, Germany) lay in ruins from the war.

Too big to fail? America had never seen such prosperity in its history. Our military was the strongest. Our farmers were farming more land than ever to feed the world and making bank like crazy. Our factories had been working over time to meet the demands of the war, even expanding their shops.

The Roaring Twenties After the war ended in 1918, the earlier 1920s were just awesome!!! America was still riding the awesome train from their victory after the war.

The Hero: The American Soldier The American soldier came home with a great parade. But after everyone was done cheering, he found out that his old job had been taken. When he tried to look for another job, they too were taken. All the growth that occurred during the war, was not needed now, who needs a thousand tanks made?

The Hero: The American Soldier The American army during World War I was promised a bonus “called Bonus Army”. This Bonus was to be paid in 1946, but the soldiers need money now.

The Hero: The American Soldier The Bonus Army was crushed, and they would not get their bonus until 1946. The soldiers instead melted away into society, and poverty.

The Farmer Farmers before World War I managed small farms that they could afford. But when World War I came around, they were encouraged to buy more land to farm to feed not only Americans, but also their allies in Europe.

The Farmer Even after the war, regular city folk bought land to make more money off of farming. However, when the war was over, all of that extra food was not needed. Now farmers are left with a lot of extra land, and are making very little off of their food.

The Factory Worker During the war, many factories changed what they were making, like cars and farm equipment, to tanks and planes and guns. They also expanded their factories to meet the demands of the war, hiring many people. But when the war ended, these materials were not needed, so many factories closed, and many jobs were lost.

Part 2: Depression in the world

Britain Known as the “Great Slump.” The British had already been in a small depression as a result of debt from WWI. However, when America went into depression, this greatly affected the English Economy. Industry and coal mining, two of Britain's biggest sectors of employment, lost 70% of their employees. Many British were either unemployed or found themselves in part-time jobs that barely kept them fed.

France France was devastated during World War I. Many cities and towns were destroyed by the war, and the country was in debt. Industry in the country had been pressed to their limits in making weapons, making it hard for them to return to peace time production.

Germany Though the German homeland was left almost untouched by the war, the allies (U.S. and their buddies) forced Germany to pay for a majority of the war debt, called reparations. Before even the Great Depression, the German “Weimar Republic” was suffering. However, thanks to the American’s, they were getting loans to help them out.

Germany However, when the Great Depression hit the U.S., there were no more helpful loans for the Germans. The Germans faced massive debt, and most manufactured goods, including food goods, had to be given to the Allies, specifically France and England, without even paying for it.

Russia During World War I the Russians fought a bloody Civil War that lasted into the early 1920’s. During the Great Depression the Russian, or now Soviet, economy suffered. Famine and disease were wide spread, and the new government, with their secret police the Cheka, persecuted anyone who seemed to be disloyal.

Japan Japan had fought on the side of the American’s during World War I. They suffered very few casualties, and their country was not attacked. However, Japan relied on other countries to provide them with many needed resources, like oil and coal to feed their growing industry. When these countries started to suffer from the depression, Japan needed to find new resources. They looked to other Asian countries to provide them with the materials, and were building up their army to take them.

The Depression Using both Notes # 1 Parts 1 and 2 Create either a diary, journal, news paper article (be creative) 2 paragraphs. Explain what is going on in America during the depression, especially through returning soldiers, farmers and factory workers. Explain what is going on in the rest of the world, use all countries from the notes.

What can you do? On a separate sheet of paper, how would stop the Great Depression in America. How can you get American’s jobs???
