1 Changes in the Frontier
Focus Lesson 4

2 Growing into Statehood
Discuss the relationships between natural resources (timber, copper, minerals), economic growth (money), and population growth.

3 Growing into Statehood
Between 1830 and 1840, Michigan grew fast. It grew faster than any other place in the country! To become a state, it needed a constitution. What is a constitution? Constitution - a plan for government

4 Growing into Statehood
On May 11, 1835, the constitution was written in Detroit by 91 men. The people of Michigan approved the constitution in October, BUT Congress refused to let Michigan a state. Why do you think they refused?

5 Growing to Statehood The problem was a small piece of land known as the Toledo Strip. Ohio and Michigan both sent soldiers to fight for the “Toledo Strip.” It was no more than a shouting match, but they could not agree! What do you think could help them come to an agreement?

6 The Toledo Strip Congress had to step in and come up with a compromise. Congress asked Michigan to give up the Toledo Strip. In return, Congress gave Michigan a part in the Upper Peninsula. Michigan liked the compromise, but became a state on January 26, 1837.

7 Michigan IT IS OFFICIAL MICHIGAN IS NOW A STATE!!!!
Michigan became the 26th state. What was the major event that allowed Michigan to become a state?

8 “Michigan Fever” By 1850, there was 400,000 people living in Michigan.
Most settlers came from New England and New York. But Michigan did not want all the settlers….

9 Population Boom Michigan passed a law to stop African Americans from moving in. After 1830, though, free African Americans began to buy land in Calvin Township.

10 Immigrants Immigrants are people who move to a different country to live in another. Before 1860, most immigrants came from Europe.

11 Making Lumber Michigan made more lumber than any place in the country. Do you remember seeing the tools they used at the Museum? The work was extremely dangerous, but lumberjacks were paid well. Michigan’s capital moved from Detroit to Lansing. Why do you think it was a good idea to move the capital? To have a more central location for the lumber industry

12 Moving Michigan’s Resources
Pg. 127

13 The Copper Rush In 1841, copper was discovered in the Upper Peninsula.
People rushed to the Upper Peninsula to get rich from mining. Until the 1920s, Michigan was the world’s best copper deposits.

14 Iron Another natural resource was discovered in the late 1840s.
Today only Minnesota has more iron. Houghton and Hancock were mining camps in Michigan, and they became cities. How did these natural resources effect people coming to Michigan?

15 Think About It Why did the population of the Upper Peninsula grow in the 1840s?

16 Persuade People to Come to Michigan
With a partner, I want you to write a song to encourage people to come to Michigan using the knowledge that you have just learned.
