Exposition The exposition comes at the beginning of the story The exposition introduces three things: ▫ Setting ▫ Main characters ▫ Main Conflict

Rising Action Incidents in the plot that Create Suspense and build toward the point of greatest interest (climax). The Rising Action is often comprised of multiple Minor Conflicts Minor Conflicts either focus on a secondary character or do not span the full length of the story As opposed to the Main Conflict which usually is carried through the entire novel and includes the main characters

Climax The climax is a decisive moment and often the turning point of the story It is usually the point of highest interest – The main conflict changes for better or for worse The rising action of the story converts to the falling action after this moment

Falling Action During the falling action, the conflict unravels with the protagonist winning or losing May contain a moment of final suspense, in which the final outcome of the conflict is in doubt

Resolution Conflicts are resolved – Normality is created for the characters – A sense of relief is present for the reader The protagonist is better off than he/she was in the exposition (typical of a comedy) The protagonist is worse off than he/she was in the exposition (typical of a tragedy) If a sequel is anticipated, there might be a hint at a future conflict to hold attention
