THE ZAMBIAN SEISMIC NETWORK 2009 IRIS/ORFEUS METADATA WORKSHOP BEING HELD IN NOVEMBER IN CAIRO, EGYPT FROM 8-17 NOVEMBER 2009 By A Mulowezi

LOCATION OF ZAMBIA 2 Area: total: 752,618 sq km POPULATION: 12.1Million

3 BACKGROUND ZAMBIAN SEISMIC NETWORK The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through Geological Survey Department operates and maintains a network of five seismic stations. These stations were established way back from 1983 – 1985 with the help from Finland (FINNIDA) these comprises of Lusaka (LSZ) which is the main station and a dial-up the rest are remote these includes Petauke (PTZ) Mansa (MZZ) Isoka (IKZ) and Kasempa (KMZ) all with international codes. It also operates and maintains three Africa Array seismic stations, two are permanent and one temporal. The permanent are Kitwe (KTWE) and Itezhitezhi (TEZI). Mongu (MONG) is temporal. Although Mongu at the moment is still temporal, the Zambian Government has the intention of putting up a permanent structure. The Department hopes to strengthen the Zambian Seismic Network in the Country and for this reason it has procured three more Broadband seismic stations to revamp three other remote stations which were previously installed/ run by FINNIDA but due to some financial constraint the stations were run down and could not be maintained.

4 SEISMIC MONITORING IN ZAMBIA Currently there are five seismic stations working in Zambia though Government is in the process of installing the other two procured stations from Gulrap. These are Lusaka (LSZ) main which is being run in collaboration with United States Geological Surveys (USGS) and Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBTO). The other three are Africa Array seismic stations namely Kitwe (KTWE), Itezhitezhi (TEZI) and Mongu(MONG). Petauke (PTZ) has just been reinstalled.

Benefits Zambia through these stations have been able to get data for use to end users Through cooperating partners some members of staff has been trained up to Msc level Technical staff at NDC have been attending training Courses coupled with introductory workshops and seminars Acquisition of application software's (in a Box) Dimas and Seisan for analysis Accessing data for the end users has been made possible
