Abraham Nahor Terah Haran Lot Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot. (Genesis 11:27).

Abraham Nahor Terah Haran Lot Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. (Genesis 11:28).

Genesis 11:29-30 Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Sarai was barren; she had no child.

Genesis 11:31-32 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there. 32 The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

Genesis 12:4 So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Genesis 12:5 Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan; thus they came to the land of Canaan.

Genesis 13:1-2 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him. 2 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold

Genesis 13:3-4 He went on his journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

Genesis 13:5-6 Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 And the land could not sustain them while dwelling together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together.

Genesis 13:7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.

Genesis 13:8-10 So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.”

Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere-- this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-- like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar (Genesis 13:10)

So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other (Genesis 13:11).

Genesis 14:1-2 And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

Genesis 14:3 All these came as allies to the valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).

Genesis 14:4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Genesis 14:5-6 In the fourteenth year Chedor-laomer and the kings that were with him, came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth- karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as El-paran, which is by the wilderness.

Genesis 14:7 Then they turned back and came to En- mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and conquered all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who lived in Hazazon- tamar.

Genesis 14:10-12 Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell into them. But those who survived fled to the hill country. 11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed. 12 They also took Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed, for he was living in Sodom.

Genesis 14:14 When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. ● Dan

Genesis 14:16 He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the people.

Genesis 14:17 Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Bera, King of Sodom King of Sodom, a city of sinful pleasure. Melchizedek, King of Salem King of Salem, a city of peace. Came out to meet Abram. He offered riches to Abram. He offered a blessing to Abram along with bread and wine. Abram refused his offer. Abram accepted his blessings and the gifts.

Bera, King of Sodom Abram returned all of his riches and people. Melchizedek, King of Salem Abram gave to him tithes of all the spoils of war. Represents the city of man. Represents the city of God.

Genesis 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High.

Genesis 14:18-20 He blessed him and said, He gave him a tenth of all. “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Genesis 15:4 Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.”

Genesis 15:7-8 And He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.” 8 He said, “O Lord GOD, how may I know that I will possess it?”

Genesis 15:9-11 So He said to him, “Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds. 11 The birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

Genesis 15 & The Covenant Ceremony “To Cut a Covenant”

Genesis 15:12 Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.

Genesis 15:17 It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces.

Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite 20 and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim 21 and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.”

Genesis 16:1-2 Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

“Gilimninu has been given to Shennima as wife. If Gilimninu bears children, Shennima shall not take another wife, But if Gilimninu does not bear, she shall take a slave-girl from the Lullu-region as wife for Shennima. As for the concubine’s offspring, Gilimninu shall not send them away.”

Genesis 15 Begins with God coming to Abram with a message. Genesis 16 Begins with Sarai coming to Abram with advice. Abram believed the Lord. Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. God gave to Abram promises of protection, of a seed, and of the possession of the land. Sarai gave to Abram her handmaiden Hagar to fulfill the promise of the seed.

Genesis 15 God spoke to Abram and gave him instruction and promises. Genesis 16 God speaks to Hagar and gives her instructions and promises. Abram is promised a son who will be his heir. Hagar is promised a son who will be a wild man.

Genesis 16:5-6 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me.” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence.

Genesis 16:7-8 Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. 8 He said, “Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

Hagar Mistreated by her mistress. Israel Mistreated by the Pharaoh. Fled into the wilderness. Escaped into the wilderness. Encountered the angel of the Lord by the spring on the way to the Wilderness of Shur. After they came out of Egypt and three days journey into the Wilderness of Shur, they found no water.

Genesis 16:9-10 Then the angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority.” 10 Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, “I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count.”

Genesis 16:13-14 Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Hagar’s Son His descendants would be innumerable. Abram’s Heir His descendants will be innumerable. He will be at enmity with the world. He will be a blessing to the world. Every man’s hand will be against him. Whoever blesses him will be blessed and whoever curses him will be cursed.

Abraham is 99 years old (17:1) Abraham is 99, Ishmael is 13 years old (17:24-25). The Lord appeared to Abram (17:1-2). God went up from Abraham (17:22). God will make a covenant with Abram to multiply him (17:2). God promises multiplication through Isaac and Ishmael (17:18-21) Abram fell on his face (17:3). Abraham fell on his face and laughed (17:17). Abram's name changed to Abraham (17:4-8). I will make nations of you. Kings shall come forth from you Sarai's name changed to Sarah (17:15-16). She shall be a mother of nations Kings of peoples shall come from her. Circumcision commanded (17:9-14).

Noahic Covenant Involves men, animals and the entire world. Abrahamic Covenant Involves Abraham and his descendants. The sign is the rainbow and relates to the entire creation. The sign if circumcision and relates to Abraham’s descendants. A universal sign.A personal sign.

Circumcision Involved a surgical “cutting.” Represented a spiritual reality: Circumcise then your heart, and stiffen your neck no more (Deuteronomy 10:16). A sign of faith: a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised (Romans 4:11). Circumcision was to the Abrahamic Covenant what baptism is to the New Covenant

Sign of the covenant is circumcision Abrahamic Covenant Sign of the covenant is baptism. Circumcision was a sign of faith. Baptism is a sign of faith. Physical circumcision represented the spiritual process of cutting away sin. Water baptism represents the identification with Christ and the spiritual cleansing that comes through the new birth. New Covenant

Abrahamic Covenant Circumcision was limited to males There is no distinction in Baptism between male or female. New Covenant The promise was to God’s people AND THEIR CHILDREN (Deuteronomy 6:6 ‑ 7; Acts 2:38 ‑ 39).

Genesis 18Genesis 19 Two angels and the Lord meet Abraham as he sits in the door of his tent. Two angels meet Lot as he sits at the gate of the city of Sodom. The narrative begins in the heat of the afternoon. The narrative takes up with the events of that same evening. Abraham ran to meet them and bowed down before them. Lot rises to meet them and then bows down before them.

Genesis 18Genesis 19 Abraham invites them to eat and rest from their travels. Lot invites them to eat and spend the night in his house. They immediately accept Abraham’s invitation. They initially refuse Lot’s invitation but, as he insists, they reluctantly accept. Abraham intercedes for Lot. Lot intercedes on behalf of the angels.

Genesis 18Genesis 19 Abraham is told of the impending judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot is told of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham’s wife expresses disbelief at the promise of God concerning the birth of a son. Lot’s wife expresses disbelief at God’s warning not to look back at the doomed city of Sodom. Culminates in the birth of a son. Culminates in the death of a city.

Genesis 18Genesis 19 Abraham believed the promises of God. Lot became fearful due to his unbelief. God gave Abraham a son through his wife, Sarah. Lot had two sons born through incest with his own daughters. Abraham’s offspring were blessed. Lot’s offspring were cursed. Pictures one in a covenant relationship with God. Pictures one approaching life independently of God.

Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven, 25 and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. (Genesis 19:24-25).

Genesis 22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

Genesis 22:4-5 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”

Genesis 22:7-8 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

Genesis 22:11-12 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Genesis 22: Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided." Isaiah 53:11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. Ra’ah, “to see.”
