Blood Covenant Part 2 3/19/2017 “The two-testament format of our Bibles reflects the contrast between “promise” and “fulfillment” that is the central storyline of the Bible.” Douglas J. Moo

Typical Covenant Details
• Witnesses • Blessings/Curses • Gifts, armor/weapons exchanged • Cutting in the body and searing the wound so the mark showed • Splitting of animals/birds • Unbreakable and generational in nature

Genesis 12:1-3 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 15 God’s Covenant with Abram

Genesis 15:6 And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness. Romans 4:3 - For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.“ Galatians 3:6 - So also, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." James 2:23 - And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called a friend of God.

Believed Fully persuaded that God is able to fulfill His word and promise

Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”

Genesis 15:4-5 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Genesis 15:8 But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”

Genesis 15:9-10 He said to him, “Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half.

Jeremiah 34:18 And the men who transgressed My covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant that they made before Me, I will make them like the calf that they cut in two and passed between its parts—

Genesis 15:11-12 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.

Genesis 15:17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.

Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

The Covenant of Circumcision
Genesis 17:1-14 The Covenant of Circumcision

Romans 4 Vs and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Romans 4:18-25

1 Corinthians 7:19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God.

Galatians 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

Galatians 6:15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—

Colossians 2:11 In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

John 6:29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him Whom He has sent.”

For Our Consideration Are we fully persuaded that God is able to keep His word in our life? Even during times of trial? What does it mean to be a new creation in Christ? What does it mean to put confidence in the flesh in our day? If God is for us, who or what can truly harm us?

Prayer Focus Thank You Lord for the New Covenant
Thank You Lord for Your great love, mercy, forgiveness and grace Thank You for Your word that instructs us and Your Spirit that guides us Thank You Lord for another day to begin or walk on with you
