3 Abraham Believed God James 2:19-26 Wednesday Evening June 21, 2017
By Pastor Fee Soliven James 2:19-26 Wednesday Evening June 21, 2017

4 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!

5  20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

6 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

7 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

8 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God.

9  24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

10 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

11 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

12 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!

13 Deuteronomy 6:4-9 4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

14 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

15 Matthew 8:28-32 28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?"

16 30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding
30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, "If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine." 32 And He said to them, "Go." So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.

17 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

18 Romans 3:27-28 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

19 Galatians 5:6 “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.”

20 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

21 Genesis 22:9-18 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

22 11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." 12 And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."

23 13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided."

24 15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son-- 17 blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.

25  18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

26 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

27 Genesis 15:5-6 5 Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be." 6 And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

28 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God.

29  “The Friend of God”

30 Isaiah 41:8 "But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, The descendants of Abraham My friend.”

31 2 Chronicles 20:5-7 5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 and said: "O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?

32 7 Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?

33 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

34 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

35  Joshua 6:22-24 22 But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, "Go into the harlot's house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her." 23 And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel.

36 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
