TIPS AND TRICKS FROM A GLOBAL FINALS IC HEAD APPRAISER

Reread the Challenge What are we supposed to do? How do we earn points? Is there anything we CAN’T do? Cross a line Touch an apparatus Talk during a specific part of the challenge Stick mailing labels to something How much time are we given? Is this a one part challenge or are there multiple parts?

DON’T take a Zero! Test your structure Does it stand/float/hold any weight? Something is better than nothing! Remove parts of the structure if necessary Have a Plan B What if this idea doesn’t work? Then what will we do? Identify when something’s not working GOOD teamwork does not mean you can’t say something is a BAD idea!

Essential Skills What holds up in water? What holds weight? What provides height? What are connectors? How do I build a stable base? How do we communicate nonverbally? What could protect something (like an egg)?

Typical Challenges at Globals Prevent something from getting wet Use a fan on a structure (to see if it still stands OR to move something) Develop a car to navigate obstacles Direct water into different cups from a funnel Nonverbal communication Other communication challenges Move objects from behind a taped line Protect an egg from being broken when an object is dropped on it “Sort” items from a distance Decision making

Common Downfalls Divide responsibilities TEST your plan Don’t be afraid to ask questions Ask for time Time management Meet the specifications of the challenge

Teamwork Global Finals teamwork rubric is very specific Shared goal and purpose Working together and cooperating Support and communication Focus on results Respect for team members and ideas Each category is rated 0 to 4

Some of your ICs may be short! Some rooms are running on a 15 minute schedule this year Last year, rooms that had this schedule had a 4 minute challenge
