EGG DROP WORKSHEETS Updated 3/24/10 Individual Plan Group Plan Purchase Order

Name: _______________ Date: _______________ Class: _______________ CHALLENGE: Using only the materials provided, your task is to design a device capable of protecting an egg from a fall of up to 3 meters without breaking. MATERIALS: You will be allowed to use only the materials below for constructing your device. They all have a price and a maximum quantity you may purchase. Anything you purchase must be used and may not be wasted…so spend wisely. MATERIALCOSTMAXIMUM AMOUNT Egg1 st one free, additional eggs $5.00n/a Braided String$1.00 for 50 cm200 cm ($4.00) Masking Tape$2.00 for 25 cm100 cm ($8.00) Paper Cup (3 oz)$2.00 per cup2 cups ($4.00) Paper Straws$0.25 per straw20 straws ($5.00) White Paper$1.00 per piece2 pieces ($2.00) DIRECTIONS: Before getting any materials, engineers spend a great deal of time thinking, planning, and drawing their ideas on paper they call a blueprint. Use the back of this paper to create a blueprint drawing of your idea. It is important to label all parts of your design and include a list of all the materials you used, how much of it you used, as well as an estimate of how much your device would cost to build. Remember to consider cost efficiency as well as a quality product that surrounds and protects an egg when dropped. The devices that survive the highest fall with the least cost to build will win!!! After drawing your own idea for homework, you will be placed into a group with 1 other student to share and plan together. This homework along with the Egg Drop packet you will be completing in class will be the first grade of the fourth quarter and is worth 10 points.

Directions: Use the space below to plan and draw your egg drop device. Be sure to consider what forces must be overcome to successfully protect an egg from a fall without having it break (Think about playing egg toss and how you catch the egg…). Also consider cost and use of materials. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. BE SURE TO LABEL! Estimated Materials Used MaterialAmountCost String Tape Cups Straws Paper TOTAL COST Explanation: Provide some support/reasons for the design choices you’ve made… ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Group Names: ________________ ___________________ BLUEPRINT 2: Combined Ideas – Now that you have a group, you need to listen to each other and share ideas. Try to use the best ideas from each member’s individual design plan. Use the space below to draw the device your group plans on constructing. Complete the table of materials you think you will need and predict the total cost of your device. Estimated Materials Used MaterialAmountCost String Tape Cups Straws Paper TOTAL COST PURCHASING: After sharing and drawing your group’s plan above, you will need to obtain materials to construct your device. You will need to complete the MATERIALS PURCHASE ORDER on the back of this and take it to the store to pick up your materials. In addition to the materials that are allowed to be a part of your device, you may use any other supplies/tools to help build your design. REMEMBER – YOU MUST USE EVERYTHING THAT YOU PURCHASE IN YOUR DEVICE – So plan your purchases wisely. You may visit the store up to 3 times to buy additional materials if necessary as long as you stay below the maximum amounts.

Engineers Names: __________________________, ____________________________, ____________________________ Maximum Materials Allowed Cost Visit 1Visit 2Visit 3 Total Cost 1 Egg (The 1 st one is FREE)$5.00 for additional 200 cm of Braided String$1.00 for 50 cm 100 cm of Masking Tape$2.00 for 25 cm 2 Paper Cups (3 oz)$2.00 per cup 20 Paper Straws$0.25 per straw 2 Pieces of White Paper$1.00 per piece **WHEN FILLING OUT THIS FORM BE SURE TO LIST THE QUANTITY AND COST OF EACH ITEM YOU PURCHASE SO YOU CAN ACCURATELY TOTAL YOUR EXPENSES AT THE END. KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY EVERYTHING AT ONCE, BUT YOU MUST USE WHATEVER SUPPLIES YOU PURCHASE IN YOUR DESING…THERE MAY BE NO WASTE!** FINAL COST AFTER COMPLETION ___________________

Name: _______________ Date: _______________ Class: _______________ DIRECTIONS: Answer these questions with your group before testing you perform your first test drop. This is part of your classwork collectable grade and answers should be complete and reflect your best effort. EVERYONE MUST DO THERE OWN WORKSHEET! 1. Explain the purpose of each material you used in your design…how do you plan on it helping to protect the egg? MATERIALPURPOSE Braided String Masking Tape Paper Cup (3 oz) Paper Straws White Paper 2. Circle the height of the test drops that you believe your device will successfully fall from without breaking. 1 st Drop - 1 METER2 nd Drop - 2 METERS3 rd Drop - 3 METERS 3. Explain the reasoning behind how your design is supposed to work…__________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Name: _______________ Date: _______________ Class: _______________ DIRECTIONS: Answer these questions over the break and bring them with you to your next science class. 1.Describe what part (s) of your device worked as expected. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 2.Identify at least 1 part of your device that did not work perfectly and explain why it was unsuccessful. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 3.Think about the projects that were successful and describe in detail at least 2 ideas you observed that helped to protect the egg. 1. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ If you could have added a NEW material that could be purchased at the store to be used in building your device, what would it be and how would you have used it?
