How to Get Published European Journal of Human Genetics www. nature How to Get Published European Journal of Human Genetics www.nature.com/ejhg Haroon Ashraf

Haroon Ashraf Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is the scientific publishing arm of Macmillan Publishers Ltd, combining the excellence of: Nature, Nature research journals, Nature Reviews, Nature Clinical Practice journals and NPG academic journals, to provide the world's premier information resource for the basic biological and physical sciences. Nature was first published in 1869. Nature research journals launched in 1992 with Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine in 1995, and more launched in 2005 Nature Reviews journals launched in 1999, with the simultaneous publication of Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and Nature Reviews Genetics Nature Clinical Practice journals launched in 2004, with simultaneous publication of NCP Urology, NCP Oncology, NCP Cardiovascular Medicine, and NCP Gastroenterology & Hepatology In 2005 NPG launches Molecular Systems Biology its first "Online-only, Author Paid, open access journal" with publishing partner EMBO During past 20 years NPG’s Academic Journal’s division has also published a wide range of other high quality scientific and medical journals, many in partnership with eminent national and international societies. We currently publish about thirty of these journals. The most relevant of these for you is of course BMT.

Academic Journals Large and expanding array of subject areas Journals published both independently and on behalf of society partners External editors and independent review process Offer open access option 7 online only titles

EJHG – Key Facts Approximately 800 submissions received each year More than 50,000 full-text papers downloaded each month Table of Contents alert is sent to 99,000 registrants International readership = 36% of subscribers are North American with 44% European Haroon Ashraf BMT was first launched in 1986, publishing quarterly, 415 pages and 53 articles a year. Today the journal publishes 2500 pages a year and more than 300 articles and offers electronic journal submission, Advance Online Publishing, eToCs, RSS feeds and more. BMT has made massive progress since it launched but so have other haematology titles. As you well know there are dozens of journals for you to pick from to publish your research. In fact in 2005 Thomson ISI’s database lists 62 haematology journal. So I’d like to hand over to the Editor in chief of BMT John Goldman who will give you pointers for choosing among these titles, explain how to get published, and by way of example guide you through BMT’s publication process.

To which journal should you send your manuscript? Questions to ask Is your paper within the scope of the journal? Does the journal reach an appropriate audience? What is the quality of other papers published? How easy is electronic submission? How quickly will you receive a decision? How quickly will your paper be published? John Goldman

How much should you worry about journal impact factors? IFs are important and currently is the only way to rank journals in terms of quality that is accepted by all (EJHG 2009 = 3.564) As well as impact, it is equally important to think about the reach of the journal promotion of your article post publication the service delivered to you as an author by the Publisher John Goldman

Open Access At acceptance stage you can also choose to pay a one off article processing charge to have your final published version available open access immediately upon publication and have it deposited into PubMed Central Fee varies from journal to journal and depend on rejection rate and subject area Original research only Already compliant with major funding agencies Choose one of two creative commons licences John Goldman

The production process Accepted manuscripts are passed to the production department A production editor will ensure paper meets the journal’s house style: Check punctuation, grammar, and consistency of terminology Check any names and abbreviations Check references Figures and tables are formatted and the manuscript is typeset Reasons for delays to starting work on a paper: Artwork in wrong format Colour costs aren’t properly settled. Licence To Publish form not complete (NB YOU retain the copyright of the text, the Publisher that of the layout!) Page proofs are e-mailed to the corresponding author within 5 weeks of acceptance – corrections to a pdf version John Goldman

Advanced online publication (AOP) Your AOP version should appear online within 25 days. It now has a ‘Digital Object Identifier’ (DOI) number and date online and can now be cited. Your paper is recorded in any relevant databases with which we have agreements as soon as it is published online, ensuring more people see your article over a longer amount of time The print version of your paper ideally will appear around 3-4 months after acceptance Haroon Ashraf When production is finished your paper is published AOP and then in print

Once published: promotion & visibility Selected articles are press-released Electronic table of contents (e-ToC alerts) Selected articles appear on www.nature.com homepage and NPG’s community and subject based platforms All articles are included in key abstracting, indexing and linking services We also look to cross promote with other relevant NPG titles and across www.nature.com Haroon Ashraf Publication triggers various processes to promote your article to the widest possible audience

www.nature.com/ejhg Haroon Ashraf Publishing with NPG and in print and online will dramatically enhance the visibility of your article. Four times per month articles are published AOP. Just click on Advanced Online Publication to see latest AOP papers.
