Presentation transcript:

When you read a passage or an article, the first thing you should do is to feel the language … There are two tasks for you to accomplish when you experience the discourse.

The first one is to understand the difficult language points The second one is to experience the content of the reading passage

In order to make you better understand this, Let us take Passage A in this handout as an example: A Ill give you five minutes to feel the language to finish the exercises on time. Please go through the exercises for Passage A first.

The first task of feeling the language : Ex.1 Do you have any difficult language points? If you do, please hands up. I offer you three chances. Ex.2 Using two words to tell me what the passage is mainly talking about.

Charity Shops( ) That is something interesting. It is a kind of local customs and practices( ) in the UK. We can learn something about charity shops which are very popular in Britain from this passage.

Ex.3 Please complete the following sentence with the words in the passage: charity shop: (British English) a shop that sells_________ goods that are ________________ to it, in order to collect _________ for a __________. unwanted donated money charity

Now its time for Ex. 4 Which one is the best choice here? The better you feel the language, the easier you make the right choice. B and D are not mentioned in the passage. They are just in your imagination. As for C, 90% is not equivalent of over 90%.

In a word, you should not make your choice according to your own life experience and knowledge, but rather the information given by the reading passage. ( )

When you read a passage or an article, the second thing you should do is to understand the way of the authors thinking … There are two tasks for you to accomplish when you experience the discourse.

The first one is to understand the main idea of each paragraph to feel the inner logical connection The second one is to explore the real purpose of the written work, the feelings or thoughts the author want to tell us between the lines.

For a better understanding of this, We will take Passage B in this handout as an example: B Ill give you five minutes to explore the passage and finish the exercises as well. First go through the exercises for Passage B

Its time for me to share your work.

For Exercise 1 : Para 1 Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Para 2 Television has not killed reading, however. Para 3 Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home.

So feel the inner logical connection! To understand the real thoughts ! (

Ex.2 the real opinion of the author The real opinion of the author is that Television has not replaced reading according to the sales situation of books and newspapers and advice us to take the initiative to have books as your best companion, which will certainly benefit us a lot ! The real opinion of the author is that Television has not replaced reading according to the sales situation of books and newspapers and advice us to take the initiative to have books as your best companion, which will certainly benefit us a lot !

Now according to Ex.2 Which one is the best choice here? For Ex.3:

According to Para 1, we may choose A and D. According to the common sense, we may choose C. But they are all wrong. According to Ex.2, we know the best choice here is B.

In a word, you should not make your choice according to certain detailed information or certain paragraph, but rather the real feelings or thoughts of the author. ( ) So please do remember : Don't miss the forest for the trees !

The first one is to feel the language better. The second one is to better understand the way of the authors thinking … So if you want to do a better job in English reading, you should do the following two things:

Now its time for me to enjoy your sentences to feel your inner world.

Through Ex. 4, can you tell me What s reading for? Reading is not for readings sake. Through reading, you should accumulate the words, expressions and the sentences you prefer day by day, which help you express your feelings and thoughts about your life in a idiomatic and authentic way.

Thinking What else can reading help you in your life? Before you answer the question, Ill tell you a story.

One of my students once asked me such a question: Why still feel lonely, when I live such a busy life? I told him I couldnt tell the reason why. But I could offer him my advice: Do some reading. Reading can help you look inside your heart and reach into your soul, which may help you find the answer.

Thinking What else can reading help you in your life? Reading can help you find something worth living for.Reading can help you find something worth living for. Reading can help you speak to your soul to find yourself in a world full of material desires.Reading can help you speak to your soul to find yourself in a world full of material desires. Reading really can help you find a peaceful mind to be yourself.Reading really can help you find a peaceful mind to be yourself. So reading really matters a lot to our life!

Now lets share a poem before finishing the class, please read and feel it together! Your English can be good, Your English can be bad, Reading is what matters, But sometimes hard. Reading can be dull, Reading can even be painful; But reading is to make who you are, So try to make it meaningful.

I believe you all understand the words I want to share with you: The best way to improve your English reading is to enjoy reading! Teachers can t become your heroes, Neither does reading itself. Only yourself can feel your inner shine through reading, A hero lies in you! Please remember and feel them always!

Before we say good-by, May I give my best wishes for your good performance in your college entrance examination, good luck to you all! God be with you!

Thank you for your attention !
