Importance of formative literacy experiences Daniella Ramos

Research It is important that when an assignment is due we get not only informative research but also research that is accurate. The internet is so easily accessed that it anyone can post something up and call it research. Although this was a very boring experience for me, I believe that it helped me out a lot as a child and also now that I am a college student. It was also confusing to me as a child because there were and still are multiple steps to conducting the correct research but it is very useful and helpful. Anything that is written or done is not worth anything unless it has proof and research. To be an effective student we must be able to produce effective work thus using the correct research and to do so we must know how to conduct correct research.

composing As we know everything must have a correct order and structure. Creativity is important but there must be some guidelines. As I grew up I realized that I really enjoyed writing it was something that became natural for me. However, writing thoughts on a paper and handing it in does not create work it just is a bunch of thoughts on a piece of paper. The required steps like brain storming, main ideas and supporting details helped me form those bunch of thoughts into a well organized good paper. A paper to me is proof of what I have learned an what I'm capable of doing and it is something that will be required of me always; sometimes more than others and sometimes less then others but it will still be required. Learning how to compose has helped me become a good writer and it has helped me understand writing as well because writing is something that ill be around forever.

creativity I believe we all are creative in our own ways but exercising that creativity has helped me with literacy. Creativity is unique and there is no unique way of teaching it but giving guidelines will help put that creativity into good use. A good writer is a creative writer and since writing is such a big part of my life; creativity takes a huge role in that too. I remember my teachers doing various activities to exercise my creativity. Whether it was to write an imaginary story or draw a picture book about fairies and dragons, it planted a seed in my brain. I learned that not everyone is the same and what makes literacy so cool and enjoyable is the fact that we can all express ourselves through literacy but also in our own ways.

reflection Reflecting always made me think more in depth about the literary piece I was working on and usually the more I reflected the clearer the piece became to me. Reflecting on something also makes it personal and with those personal examples I was able to understand the piece of literary work more. Reflection also made me use my voice and opinion which made me more intellectual. Also, reflection made me more of a thinker. Teachers often told me that before I started an assignment I should reflect on what the assignment was really asking and what the “big picture” was which allowed me to use my thinking skills.

Critical thinking The main phrase I can remember from my teachers as I was growing up was “think outside the box.” sometimes because we want to get the assignment done so fast we put any answer or write down anything when there could be a deeper meaning to that assignment or more importantly a deeper lesson. I remember wanting to quit sometimes and just writing down anything on a piece of paper but luckily I had some teachers who really wanted to teach and did not let me quit so easily. I remember assignments like reading a rhyme and trying to solve it or interpret it and that also exercised my brain. Critical thinking taught me to take a second and really think about the task at hand and how I wanted to interpret it to make a great piece of work. It also taught me possibilities. There is not always one clear cut answer to something. Sometimes your supposed to make your own meaning and just go with it.

As a young adult it is already tough enough going to school because I feel it is the beginning of a time where everyone is trying to find themselves. Some students may be excellent when it comes to literature and some may absolutely hate it. I think the job of the teacher it to try and make the students understand literature so when they get out and have to use it on their own they wont be completely lost. Beginning a journey is what is important to young adults and finding what thy truly like and appreciate about themselves because they are at a young time where finding themselves will steer them into the path that best suits them. Literature has changed some peoples lives and it has allowed others to see their passion in life. These too prepare young adults for the rest of their lives because as they get older they will see that these experiences that they learned are everywhere and are to be used mostly everywhere.

The Argument! As teaching continually evolves it is important that certain literacy skills that are being taught and have been taught remain in the curriculum. Not only do these skills help you pass a course but they also prepare you for life. These skills are skills that I have used all throughout middle school into high school and on to college and still will keep using it all throughout my career. There are some answers that are not clear cut and require critical thinking to solve them. Reflecting will make us think before we speak and come up with answers or work that is efficient. Creativity shows that you are a person who is beneficial to any organization or team because you have bright ideas that anyone can benefit from. Proper research will strengthen a piece of work that must be submitted or represented and it is important to know how to research and what to research as well as what kind of research is useful for any specific work or project. Composing will help in putting everything together and structuring it in such a way that makes your piece of work a great piece compared to a mediocre one. All in all these specific literacy skills help create great pieces of work as well as help prepare for the future and should therefore remain in the English curriculum because every child growing up needs these skills when they grow up and continue their future no matter what it is.
