Welcome Back! English 5-6 Day 1 14 September 2011

14 September 2011 On Tap: ICTW intro and expectations. ICTW #1 What is an American? Exit Ticket: Group Poster Learning Targets: “I will…” Understand ICTW expectations and formatting. Develop an introductory understanding of American culture and ideals.

Immediate Critical Thinking and Writing Every day we start class with an ICTW! (Every. Single. Day.) We will collect and grade your ICTWs every Friday. If you miss class, you can make up your ICTW at home – they will be posted on my website. (Because of this, there are no ICTW make-ups past Friday.) To share or not to share…

ICTW format Elliott Sherman ICTW #1 September 14, Each ICTW needs your name, ICTW #, and date

ICTW #1 This course is designed as a survey of American literature, and will primarily discuss American authors and ideas. As young adults it is imperative that you begin to develop your own opinions and ideas about what it means to be an American living in this culture. Please reflect upon, and respond in your best writing to at least one of the following questions (if you are stuck use all questions as prompts): What is an American? What does it mean to be an American? How would you describe American culture? What are some common cultural values and beliefs held by many Americans? How are Americans viewed globally? What do people from other countries say/believe about America?

In your table groups (2 minutes MAX!): Share your writing with your group members. For EACH group member: Choose ONE sentence that you are proud of. or Choose an idea that you feel you could defend (passionate about).

In your table groups (10 minutes MAX!): The Poster: Title your poster “What is an American?” Introduce your ideas with –“An American is:” On the back, please put each group member’s name. To receive credit your poster must be clear and legible from across the room.

What is an American? In your table groups: Create a poster that represents your group’s observations of what it means to be an American using the sentences you selected. Each poster MUST have ONE sentence for EVERY group member. Each sentence should be a different color.

HOMEWORK: Thoroughly read the English 5-6 Course Syllabus. There will be a Quiz TOMORROW!!!

Exit Ticket: Turn in your group poster.
