Kina Lara, M.A. San Jacinto College NADE Conference 2015

Today’s Objectives To learn the basics of the flipped classroom method To learn about different types of technology and best practices for flipping your classroom

A Snapshot of Students Today “Digital natives” Increasing dependence on technology The average college student today owns 7 technological devices Over 85% of college students own a laptop 73% of college students said they cannot study without technology Students are spending more and more time “online”

Internet Users 75% of all adults 92% of non- students % of undergrads 99% of grad students 94% of community college students

So What Does This Mean for Us? Meet them where they are Student engagement and learning in & out of the classroom Tech expertise NOT required No need to allow technology to infiltrate or distract

The Generation Gap

The Flipped Classroom What have you heard about the flipped classroom method? Buzz word in education Invert your classroom Online lectures Homework in class

The Flipped Classroom Meeting our students in the middle

Traditional vs. Flipped Classrooms Traditional Classroom Before class, students may or may not read over the textbook. During class, students listen to professor’s lecture and take notes. After class, students attempt to do homework on their own. Flipped Classroom Before class, students work on interactive online learning modules. During class, students practice applying concepts and get feedback. After class, students extend understanding and move to more complex tasks.

STUDENT SUCCESS Flipped Classroom Learning through Activity & Discussion Positive Learning Environment Educational Technology promotes uses leads to A Theoretical Framework for Flipped Learning

Ways to Flip Your Classroom: BEFORE CLASS Post lecture you would traditionally deliver in class to LMS Have students read assigned chapters before lecture Have students watch videos of lecture material

Ways to Flip Your Classroom: TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY E-ReadersPowerPointsPrezisOnline ModulesKalturaCamtasiaYouTubeKhan AcademyTED TalksITunes U

Ways to Flip Your Classroom: LOW STAKES ASSESSMENT QuizzesDiscussion BoardsGuided questions Online labsIn-class polls or clickers Notes/AnnotationsShort writing assignments

Ways to Flip Your Classroom: DURING CLASS During Class Active learning Student- centered Group discussion Problem solving Critical thinking Hands-on application

Misconceptions of Flipped Learning  I have to flip 100% of my class for this to work.  I have to create all brand new materials from scratch.  The flipped model works the same way in all disciplines.  In a flipped classroom, pedagogy serves technology.  If I flip my class, I’ll never be able to lecture again.  I learned this way, so my students can too.

Benefits of Flipped Learning Students work through lectures at their own pace Personalized & individualized learning More interaction & feedback Elevates the role of teacher & learner Increased student engagement & active learning Better questions from students Efficient use of time Dissolves boundaries between in & out of class

“Don’t limit a child to your own learning, for he was born in another time.” -Rabindranath Tagore
