Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. It is a national holiday. Thanksgiving was the first holiday celebrated in America. It was initially a way of giving thanks to god, and then to the Indians for their help.

The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 when the pilgrims invited the Indians to a three-day feast to celebrate the successful autumn harvest. The pilgrims were having trouble growing and catching food, so the Wampanoag Indians helped them. Squanto, a Wampanoag Indian, taught them to grow corn. The tribe also donated food to them when they ran out of supplies from England.

Who were the Pilgrims? A small group of people who sailed to North America in order to start a new life and gain religious freedom. They sailed on the Mayflower ship and landed on Plymouth Rock.

Today, families celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

The tradition of eating turkey on Thanksgiving was created because there were so many wild turkeys in Plymouth Colony for the pilgrims to hunt.

Every Thanksgiving There is a huge parade called “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade”, which takes place in New York City. There is also always a big football game on in the afternoon.

My Family’s Thanksgiving Traditions My grandparents and family friends come over for a huge meal. We watch the Thanksgiving Day parade while we cook. We eat our meal: Turkey, green beans, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, salad, cranberries, rolls, apple pie, and pumpkin pie.

My Family’s Thanksgiving Traditions While we eat, we go around the table and each say something we are thankful for. We all go for a walk. We watch a movie. We put up our Christmas tree.

What are you thankful for?
