 Think about open data as an output from any process  Consider open data output as part of new systems or process reviews just as you would consider information security and general reporting requirements  When acquiring content from third parties, seek permission to make it available to the public if possible  Incorporate provisions for releasing data from outsourced service providers in contracts  Publishing – don’t just think glossy brochure or flashy website, think machine-readable!

Typical NZGOAL adoption process Executive level Data Champion Includes NZGOAL in organisation’s strategic and business policies Operational level Coordinator Connects business groups with NZGOAL requirements: Website content and publications staff NZGOAL statement on website NZGOAL statements on publications and downloadable web content

Set NZGOAL policy for your institution Include NZGOAL in your donor agreements Licence copyright works and non-copyright materials for re-use Develop a process for copyright owners of existing resources to allow re-use Draw up a policy and procedure for addressing orphan works

Recommended licences For copyright works, apply the default licence -the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence – whenever possible Use the NZGOAL Review and Release process to identify whether a more restricted CC licence is needed For non-copyright materials, make clear “no-known rights” statements
