Getty Villa Frescoes By: Trevor Walters

Outside Wall of Getty Villa The blocking design on the wall is well defined. There are frames around the rectangles to emphasize the blocking. Shows that this is the First Roman Style “Incrustation”

Wall Fragment with a Scene of Meal Preparation A festivity is represented by the preparation of a meal. I believe this is the 2nd Roman Style “architectural”. Although there aren’t columns and buildings in the background, there are some items of daily life (the vase & bowl) which are given shaded to make it seem like they are projecting out the fresco.

Wall or Ceiling Fragment of Bacchus and Ariadne Due to its framed appearance, giving it the picute gallery effect, it can be considered the 3rd Roman Style called “ornamental”

Wall or Ceiling Fragment of Maenad There seems to be a border around the fresco for a picture gallery effect making it part of the 3rd Roman painting style

Wall or Ceiling Fragment of a Satyr As well as the last two, there is a border around the fresco, further meaning it falls into the 3rd Roman painting style

Wall Fragment with a Muse This cannot be style 1, for it is not in a shape of blocks. Cant be style 2, for there are no columns, buildings, or real life items. Cannot be style 4 for there is no architecture in it. So my guess would be style 3 since it is so centered, on a gallery like background

Interior Wall of Getty Villa Leading to the Garden This is style 1, for it has colored slabs of marble and has some blocky looking shapes.

Wall Fragment with a Woman and a Leopard Definitely style 3 for there is a border around the fresco giving it a gallery effect.

Wall Fragment with a Peacock I believe this may be style 4, for the peacock standing on the fence resembles an element found in Roman gardens. It represents open space extending beyond the garden walls

Wall Fragment with Two Women It seems as though the whole fresco did not survive over all this time. From what we have in front us, the fresco creates a feeling of calmness and intimacy. There is no architecture, borders, but there is a white background possibly meaning it could be part of style 3

Wall Fragment with a Women on a Balcony Shows architecutral structures, possible border, and not much a realistic feel. I would say this belonged to style 2.

Wall Fragment with Cupids and Psyche Making Perfume Definitely style 3, for its background is a monochrome black, and is clearly outlined by a border giving it the picture gallery effect. Definitely style 3

Exterior Wall of Roman Villa near the Garden Shadowing of an elaborate column. Makes it pop out. Definitely style 2

Exterior Wall #2 of the Getty Villa near the Garden Elaborate columns and architecture with depth in the background. Illusion of a three-dimensional space. Clearly style 2

Exterior Wall #3 of Getty Villa near the Garden Same as the one before. Has elaborate architectural columns and frames, not to mention the 3-D effect. Definitely style 2
