2 Silhouettes in Linear Perspective

3 A silhouette is the image of a person, an object or scene consisting of the outline and a basically featureless interior, with the silhouetted object usually being black.

4 Although the art form has been popular since the mid-18th century, the term “silhouette” was seldom used until the early decades of the 19th century.

5 Silhouette images may be created in any artistic media, but the tradition of cutting portraits from black card has continued into the 21st century.

6 From its original graphic meaning, the term "silhouette" has been extended to describe the sight or representation of a person, object or scene that is backlit, and appears dark against a lighter background.

7 Anything that appears this way, for
example, a figure standing backlit in a doorway, may be described as "in silhouette".

10 Linear Perspective A system for drawing objects that use lines and vanishing points to determine how much an object's apparent size changes with space.

11 Linear Perspective Based on the way the human eye sees the world.
Objects that are closer appear larger, more distant objects appear smaller. To create the illusion of space the artists creates a vanishing point on the horizon line. Objects are drawn using orthogonal lines, which lead to the vanishing points.

12 Vanishing Point Horizon Line Orthogonal Line
The single point on the horizon where all the lines on the ground level seem to come together. Horizon Line The place where the land and the sky meet. Orthogonal Line Two or more lines or line segments which are perpendicular.
