1 S P A C E

2 SPACE Element of art that refers to the emptiness or area between, around, above, below or within objects. All objects take up SPACE.

3 Point of View The shapes and forms you see depend upon your point of view. This is the angle from which the viewer sees an object.

4 Perspective …A graphic system that creates the illusion of depth on a 2-D surface.
FOREGROUND—closest to viewer MIDDLE GROUND—middle of composition BACKGROUND—farthest point in composition

5

6 Picture Plane The front of the viewable 2-dimensional surface used to create artwork. Picture Plane 2-D Surface containing the composition

7 2 types of SPACE: POSITIVE SPACE (figure) : is the shape or form itself, it takes up actual space. NEGATIVE SPACE (ground) : is the empty space between the shapes or forms.

8 Illusions of depth There are 5 ways to create the illusion of depth on a picture plane. Artists use these so that they can make a more realistic depiction of real objects in real space. They are: Size Overlapping Placement Color Value

9 Ways to Create Space (or Depth)
SIZE : large objects appear closer than small objects

10 Ways to Create Space (or Depth)
OVERLAPPING : objects that cover part of another so that it appears to be in front of the other object

11 Ways to Create Space (or Depth)
PLACEMENT : objects placed lower on the picture plane seem to be closer to the viewer than objects placed near eye level. The most distant shapes are those placed above eye level. Picture Plane 2-D Surface containing the composition

12 Ways to Create Space (or Depth)
COLOR :Using color to create a sense of depth. Example: an artist may use cool colors to make the background recede and warm to make objects move forward.

13 Ways to Create Space (or Depth)
VALUE :Using a variety of values to create depth. Lighter values tend to recede behind darker ones.

14 Linear Perspective When artist use lines to create depth
There are 3 types of linear perspective One-point Two-point Three-point

15 One-point Perspective
when artists use linear perspective in combination with a single vanishing point. Vanishing point-Point on the horizon where receding lines seem to meet. Orthogonal/receding lines-Perspective lines that point to the vanishing point

16 Where are the orthogonal lines? Where is the vanishing point?

17 One-point Perspective Cont’d…
Horizon line-Point at which the earth and sky seem to meet.
