The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. Look at the subjects highlighted red below. What do they tell about the sentences? The Verb in a sentence is a word that shows action or a state of being. The verb tells what people or things do or are. Look at the verbs highlighted in red below. A verb in the present tense must agree with the subject of the sentence. They must both be singular or both be plural.
