Cardiovascular System: Heart Chapter 12

How does water flow through your house? How does water get to your shower?

The heart functions as a pump. It produces the pressure responsible for making blood flow through the blood vessels. It is actually 2 pumps in one organ. The right side is responsible for pulmonary circulation allowing for CO2 and O2 exchange with the blood The left side is responsible for systemic circulation. 5L per minute  2 ½ soda bottles.

Heart Statistics It is about the size of a closed fist. It is about the size of a closed fist. It is cone-shaped. The base lays superior in the thoracic cavity and the apex lays inferior. It is cone-shaped. The base lays superior in the thoracic cavity and the apex lays inferior. It is in the thoracic cavity between the lungs within the mediastinum in the pericardial sac. It is in the thoracic cavity between the lungs within the mediastinum in the pericardial sac. It is 2/3rds to the left of the midline of the body. It is 2/3rds to the left of the midline of the body.

Organization of the Heart There are 4 chambers: 2 atria and 2 ventricles. There are 4 chambers: 2 atria and 2 ventricles. It is surrounded by the pericardium- a serous membrane with a fibrous parietal layer which protects from over distention and a visceral layer which is covered with serous fluid and reduces friction. This layer also runs continuous with the blood vessels.
