Description of Function: The primary purpose of the OSHA Act of 1970 is to ensure that employers provide employees with an environment free from recognized hazards, such as exposure to toxic chemicals, excessive noise levels, mechanical dangers, heat or cold stress, or unsanitary conditions. The act assures safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration works in compliance with the OSHA Act of 1970 by assisting and encouraging the States in their efforts to assure safe and healthful working conditions and by providing for research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health.

Environmental Issues Affected: Though the act is mainly concerned with the safety of workers in the workplace, it does affect the environment by ensuring that no toxic chemicals are leaked and that sanitary conditions are maintained at the workplace. Agency/Group Responsible for Regulation and Enforcement: The regulations of the act are enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration under the U.S. Department of Labor.
