Sustainability The port of Montreal has adopted since 2001 several environmental initiatives to reduce the environmental pollutions provided from the port activity. In 2010 was approved by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) the sustainable development policy: 1. To ensure responsible management by the organization; 2.To increase contributions to the local community; 3.To promote responsible communication and engage our stakeholders; 4.To provide a safe and stimulating work environment; 5.To reduce our environmental footprint; 6.To ensure that safety and security remain core operating values; 7.To become a leading force in areas of sustainable development; 8.To ensure the Port of Montreal’s economic mission.

Measures to reduce environmental pollution in the Port. Innovation in soil solidification; Recycled and recyclable railway ties; Hybrid vehicles; Reduce the transition time and waiting time of trucks; Reduce the water consumptions.

Measures to reduce environmental pollution in the Port. Innovation in soil solidification: The port is using a method of soil reinforcement to solidify the soil extracted from land that has been redeveloped to accommodate the containers. This procedure is saving the equivalent of 170 tons of greenhouse gases that would be eliminated in the atmosphere.

Measures to reduce environmental pollution in the Port. Recycled and recyclable railway ties: The MPA is making test to see how ties made from recycle tires and plastic bottles react to the Quebec climate. This will help to reduce the hardwood trees consumption, will eliminate the use of creosote, and will recycle millions of plastic bottles and bags. Image 8

Measures to reduce environmental pollution in the Port. Hybrid vehicles: All the fleet of security and fire prevention vehicles has been converted to gasoline- electric hybrids. The consumption of fuel was reduced almost in 50 percent.

Strategies to minimize consumption of natural resources There are some strategies that not only the Port of Montreal but others ports are taking to reduce the use of natural resources. Reduce the transition time and waiting time of trucks in the port gates: With this initiative the consumption of fuel gases will be reduced. Reduce the water consumptions: The ports are doing the optimizations of flushing routes and vessels reconstruction.
