3 The Port of New York and New Jersey is the port district of the New York-Newark metropolitan area, encompassing the region within approximately a 25-mile (40 km) radius of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It includes the system of navigable waterways in the estuary along 650 miles (1,050 km) of shoreline in the vicinity of New York City and northeastern New Jersey.

In 2010, the Port of New York and New Jersey handled 5.3 million loaded and unloaded 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 16% increase in total container traffic from 2009. Port handled million tons of cargo in 2009. According to 2012 statistics, the Port of New York and New Jersey ranks 25th in the World in terms of container traffic handled.

9 Clean Vessel Incentive Program
The Port Authority has implemented a Clean Vessel Incentive Program. Through the Program the PANYNJ has made available financial incentives to encourage operators of ocean-going vessels (OGVs) to utilize environmentally friendly clean ship practices.

10 Truck Replacement Program
To reduce diesel truck emissions while improving health and safety, the Port Authority implemented a plan to phase out older trucks that serve its marine terminals. This program has been an important component of the Clean Air Strategy for the Port of New York and New Jersey.

12 Vehicle Shipping and Processing
This is one of the largest port in U.S. for automobile imports and exports. In 2013, the port handled 745,419 new and used vehicles – up 5.4% since 2012. Each terminal provides immediate access to major interstate highways and a number of rail services.

A commitment of more than $4 billion by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ensure that the Port is ready to handle the increasingly larger vessels that will carry that cargo. Partners plays an integral role in the development of infrastructure and services required to serve global trade through the Port.

20 Clean Air Strategy for the Port of New York and New Jersey
The Port Authority has worked with its partners to develop a Clean Air Strategy for the Port of NY and NJ. The strategy lays out practical actions that the Port and industry stakeholders can take to reduce diesel and greenhouse (GHG) emissions in advance of potential regulations.
