TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 BELLWORK: SHARING (read the complete sentence) I (do/do not) feel comfortable writing a narrative (story) because...

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 TODAY WE ARE: 1) Identifying & correcting sentence fragments (grammar), 2) Reviewing capitalization rules (mechanics), 3) Editing a rough draft to correct fragments & capitalization errors. HOW? WHAT WILL THIS LOOK LIKE?

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Grammar can be defined as a set of rules that govern how people speak a particular language. These rules govern how language speakers form acceptable sentences. Example-French/Spanish grammar: nouns then adjectives. English grammar: adjective then noun.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Mechanics refers more specifically to rules (aka conventions) that govern written language. Examples: *Underlining titles *Capitalizing proper nouns *Spelling rules (I before E except after C or when sounding like A as in neighbor & weigh)

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Why do you think we are learning or reviewing grammar & mechanics at this point in our workshop? What will it help us with? Rbook-top of page 52 Let's read the introduction at the top of the page.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 SENTENCE VS. SENTENCE FRAGMENT: A sentence relates a complete idea: Who (subject) & what they do (verb). Planes soar. Trees grow. A fragment is a piece or part of a sentence. It is either missing a subject (who) OR the verb (what they do)

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 SENTENCE VS. SENTENCE FRAGMENT: Examples page 52- Directions- Numbers 1 through 5.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 FIXING SENTENCE FRAGMENTS: There are several ways to fix fragments. Sometimes it's best just to add the missing subject or verb. Sometimes it's better to combine your fragment with another sentence. Combining usually means adding a comma & a conjunction.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 FIXING SENTENCE FRAGMENTS: DIRECTIONS-middle of page 52: Examples Let's do number 6. Complete 7 through 9—you can work with your table partner.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 EDITING YOUR ROUGH DRAFT: Check each sentence. Make sure each sentence has a subject & a predicate (verb). Divide each sentence right in front of your verb (action word). Example: Several weeks later, I felt much better. Several weeks later, I / felt much better.

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 FIX ANY FRAGMENTS YOU FIND: EITHER BY: A) ADDING THE MISSING WORD/PHRASE. B) COMBINING THE FRAGMENT INTO ANOTHER SENTENCE (combining=comma & conjunction).

TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 E-READS REMINDER: 1) During your Independent Reading rotation, if the computer is free, you may use it for e-reads. 2) The icon says 'e-reads log-in'. 3) Make sure you complete the handout as you read. 4) You can take the RC quiz right afterwards on the same computer.
