The Council of Europe has called on member states to appoint a "National Relay" to coordinate this event nationally and disseminate promotional materials produced by the Council of Europe.

Objectives The overall objectives are to develop awareness: -the rich linguistic diversity of Europe, which must be maintained and encouraged. -of the need to diversify the range of languages learned (including less common languages), which translates into multilingualism. -the importance of developing at least some degree of expertise in two or more languages for full participation in democratic citizenship in Europe.

For who is the European day of languages ? The invitation of the Council of Europe to celebrate the day is for both authorities of its member states that all potential partners at: policy (measures or timely reflection related to language policy issues, for example); public (awareness with the general objectives of the day and in particular the importance of a diversified language learning throughout life and all ages, educational institutions, the workplace, etc.); associative (specific actions by and / or NGOs, associations, companies, etc.).
