6 th Global RCE Conference- Report Back Teacher Education and Better Schools Thematic Discussion

Session Objectives 1.To explore the theme on teacher education holistically with a particular emphasis on transformative learning 2.To share opportunities for collaborative implementation of teacher education projects 3.To highlight critical actions towards developing RCE capacities to foster transformative teacher education

Principles of Teacher Education Change for ESD UNICEF/RCE Western Australia Child centred –Inclusive Relevant Active Learning –Democratic and participatory –Pupil voice Peer learning Total experience Just in time solutions

Making this happen in the RCE Community There was broad consensus on the need for a quality teacher education model and the discussion centred around. What is needed in the context of teacher education to make this happen? What evidence do we have that this model is effective?

Three domains for assessing teacher education systems and services delivery … Delivery Services Design

Shared Experiences RCE Crete The system needs to transform not reform. Teachers are not taught to be ‘transmitters of knowledge’ but to become ‘agents of change’ E.g. Wiki RCE Lagos Engaged students using a participatory method Technology to the child’s needs not to the ‘old’ curriculum Grand Rapids Tool box guide driven by students.

Shared Experiences RCE Delhi A movement away to a more project based curriculum. Development of key competencies Communication skills ( including ICT) A teacher manual is still necessary RCE Portugal New ‘school kits’ based on Values Science enquiry RCE Nuremburg Teachers learned from a social media project.

Evidence UNESCO/UNICEF/UNCEC data base Charles Hopkins UK Ofsted /other ESD reports Link ESD to the raising standards agenda

Way Forward RCE Rhein Meusse We need a global learning space – link to UNU/UNESCO Create synergies using thematic ideas e.g. climate change RCE Toronto Challenge members states with evidence RCE ( Detlev) Embrace EC projects e.g. Mobile phone App to measure social and economic criteria alongside carbon emmissions RCE Vienna ( Marissa) Link the ‘quality model’ to school development processes Train and involve all school stakeholders e.g. school energy managers and ‘intermediaries’ RCE Gratz Shift culture – peer training of teachers
