Agroforestry Dave Trotter Sustainable Agriculture Management Branch Ministry of Agriculture and Lands

Outline General definitions Background System specifics and examples Where might it fit? More information

Agroforestry a management approach that integrates, traditional, familiar and new agriculture and forestry practices into land management systems which contribute to diversification and sustainability. Intentional - designed and managed for a planned result Intensive - all components are intensively managed Integrated - a blend of agriculture, forestry and environmental science Interactive - designed to minimize negative and maximize positive interactions between trees, other crops and livestock

Integrated, Intentional, Interactive What is it? Management approach – purposefully integrates the growing of trees with “crops” and/or livestock. Co-management Integrated, Intentional, Interactive

Characteristics Crops or livestock and trees are intentionally combined. The interactions between these components are planned and managed. The enterprise is managed and evaluated as a single system rather than as separate parts. S. Sharrow www.DoctorRange.com

Used Worldwide Practiced in various parts of the world for thousands of years. Land shortages + population growth Need for efficient production systems for food and wood resources Important role in sustainability Haryana, India G. Powell

Sustainable management & integration propagation, pruning, tending, weeding, selective harvest, and habitat modification use of fire to manage forest overstory to optimize berry production, wildlife habitat (enhance forage and browse) sugar maple syrup – NTFP industry with origins prior to European settlement

Agroforestry Systems Silvopasture Integrated Riparian Management Timberbelts/ Windbreaks/Buffers Alley cropping Forest Farming Zabek

Agroforestry “Resources" Conventional forest products e.g. timber, pulp, poles, fuel wood Crops from the trees NTFR’s: e.g. boughs, nuts, sap, fruit, cones Crops Below or Between the Trees Forage to florals and everything in-between. Functions e.g. habitat, filtration, biodiversity, conservation, C-sequestration
