2 INSTITUTIONAL STRATEGIES Institutional strategies are the instruments put in place by the institutional stakeholders to enhance the performance of Agricultural systems. The institutional stakeholders include: Government at all levels. Non-Governmental Organization. Farmer Unions/Organizations.

3 Institutional strategies continues International agencies. Educational institutions. Research institutions. Extension institutions.

4 Resilience in Agriculture Resilience in Agriculture is the capability of the Agricultural systems to resist any change that may adversely affect : Food production Food security and Human security.

5 Resilience continues A resilient Agricultural system, on a sustainable basis, provides for : Food, fibre,and wood for the growing population. Raw material for industrial growth. Labour for industrial sector. Income or capital for farmers. Foreign exchange earners for nation.

6 Resilience continues Security of life and property. Enhance education of the people. Provision of social infrastructure. Make people aware of their vulnerability situation. Motivate people to embark on adaptation strategies.

7 Strategies Promotion of sustainable Agriculture Extension Education. Promotion of crop of relative advantage. Provision of storage facilities. Strategic grain reserve. Credit facilities for farmers> Development of rural infrastructure.

8 Promotion of sustainable Agricultural practices Adoption of soil conservation method and improvement methods. Adoption of pest and disease management strategies. Acquisition and distribution of improved seeds. Adoption of efficient and effective farm management techniques.

9 Extension education The goal of extension work in Nigeria has been to help farmer improve their socio-economic situations through:.-Commodity based extension approach -Innovation driven extension approach. -Educational institution extension approach. -Integrated rural development extension approach( using Training and Visit extension system).

10 Promotion of crops of relative advantage Certain crops do best in certain ecological zones. Crop Zones Cassava Forest and Guinea Cocoa,Palm trees Forest Millet,Sorghum Sahel and Sudan Cotton Sudan

11 Provision of storage facilities It is a multi-dimensional problems that requires multi-sectoral efforts of:-Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. -Ministry of Science and Technology. -NGOs,Farmer groups and farmers. Credit institutions. -Research and Educational institution.

12 Strategic Grain Reserve Reserve earmarked for 2003 are 1.5 million metric tons of maize,millet,sorghum,and rice on Local Government basis. Theoretically, there are 774 of such silos, each specializing in the Local grain crops.12

13 Credit facilities -Development of micro credit institutions. Agricultural Credit guarantee schemes. -Agricultural Cooperative and Rural Development Bank(ACRDB). -State agricultural Credit Cooperation. Institution of peoples and Community Banks with branches in all the Local government Areas.

14 Development of Rural Infrastructures Road networks. Basic Health Institutions and schemes. Universal Primary Education. Rural water supply. Rural Electricity.
