INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS: WHAT IS BUSINESS? Class 1 September 10, 2009 Bishop Kearney High School

Brainstorming Activity  10 minutes  What is business?  What does it mean to do business?  Why is it important to understand business?

Definition  Business is:  A commercial or industrial enterprise and the people who make up that enterprise  What is a commercial enterprise:  the activity of providing goods and services involving financial and commercial aspects

Commercial Enterprises  What is a commercial enterprise?  A business that is owned and run by people who produce goods or sell services to make a profit from them They are commercial because they sell to anyone who can afford them They are industrial when they sell items to businesses and resellers (i.e. big machinery)

Three Meanings of Business  Business as Commerce  Business as an Occupation  Business as an Organization

Commerce  Definition:  The buying and selling of goods  Do you engage in commerce? How? When? Where? Why?

Occupation  Definition  An activity that serves as one's regular source of livelihood; a vocation.  Types  How would business as an occupation affect you?

Business as an Occupation  What is business occupation?  The acquired set of skills that enable a person to create valuable goods and services that can be traded at a profit  People choose occupations to pursue in a self-interested way based on how much money they wish to earn; profitable occupations depend on your human capital Human capital – your knowledge, skills, experience, judgment, personality, and abilities What is the most valuable resource you bring to an organization?

Business as an Organization  Definition:  A tool that allows people to shape and control the behaviors of employees to produce goods and services  Organizational structure – the framework of tasks and leadership relationships that coordinate people so they can work together towards a common goal

In Class Assignment – 10 Minutes  List 5 places that you pass every day (either on your way to school, home, or while you are out with your family).  Did these places sell goods or products or provide services?  What types of business is it? Retail or Service ?  How and why do companies provide goods and services for customers?
