North Carolina State Standards Update Common Core and More

The Common Core Began as a state-led initiative to establish a common set of standards in English and math (not a Federal Government initiative) Designed by a diverse group of parents, teachers, experts and school administrators North Carolina is one of 45 states and 3 territories that have adopted these standards in math and English language arts.

Common Core English Language Arts Design There are four strands: Reading + Reading Foundational Skills K-5 (Foundational Skills: Concepts About Print, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Word Recognition, Fluency) Writing (includes grammar) Speaking and Listening Language There are technology requirements blended throughout.

Common Core Math Our District core math program is still Math Expressions. Through the work of District math “core teams” all the common core standards have been linked to lessons in Math Expressions. The following chart shows the math domains that are studied in grades K-8:
