Presentation Overview TIA Overview TIA Standards Development Overview TIA NGN-related Activities 3GPP2 NGN Activities (TIA is an Organizational Partner and Secretariat)

TIA Overview Our Mission: TIA represents providers of communications and information technology products and services for the global marketplace through its core competencies in standards development, domestic and international advocacy, as well as market development and trade promotion programs. Facilitates the convergence of new communications networks while working for a competitive and innovative market environment. Strives to further members' business opportunities, economic growth and the betterment of humanity through improved communications.

TIA Website: Full-service trade organization serving the communications and information technology industry TIA facilitates business development and a competitive market environment for its 1000 member companies through: –Domestic and international advocacy –Market statistics –Trade Shows –Standards Development

TIA is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) TIA is ITU-T Approved and Qualified: –Rec. A.5 (referencing documents of other organizations in ITU-T Recommendations) –Rec. A.6 (Cooperation and exchange of information between ITU-T and other SDOs) TIA standards have been referenced by the ITU-R and ITU-T for IMT-2000

TIA Standards Development Overview

Standards development dates back to 1920’s –As an ANSI-accredited SDO, TIA develops consensus-based, voluntary industry standards for a wide variety of telecommunications products and systems 8 product-oriented Engineering Committees Over 70 subcommittees and working groups –Over 1,300 individuals from nearly 20 countries work in these formulating groups –Representatives from academia, manufacturers, service providers and end- users, including the government

Standards projects and technical documents –Formulated according to guidelines in the Association's ANSI-approved Engineering Manual –Potential projects initiated by a technical contribution to a TR/FO or subcommittee Request creation of a new standard or technical document in a particular area of technology TIA has more than 600 standards documents in print –

TIA represents U.S. interests in the international standards arena –Active in ITU, IEC, ISO, JTC 1, CITEL, etc. Secretariat to: –Several Technical Advisory Groups –Working Advisory Groups –International Technical Groups –Partnership Projects (e.g., 3GPP2) –Organizational Partner w/ ETSI in Project MESA (Mobile Broadband Specs for Public Safety)

TIA NGN-related Activities from TR-45 perspective

TR-45, Mobile and Personal Communications Systems –Develops performance, compatibility, interoperability and service standards for mobile and personal communications systems TDMA, CDMA, AMPS-based systems –Comprised of 6 Subcommittees –With the exception of TR-45.1 (analog) and TR-45.3 (TDMA), majority of standards development closely aligned and coordinated with 3GPP2

3GPP2, Third Generation Partnership Project 2 –Develops 3G global specifications for cdma2000 ® evolving ANSI/TIA/EIA-41 networks –TIA is a Organizational Partner in and Secretariat to 3GPP2 –Collaborative relationship between the TR-45 Subcommittees (TR) and 3GPP2 Technical Specification Groups (TSG) for the development of 3G standards TR-45.2, TR-45.4, TR-45.5 and TR-45.6 TSG-X, TSG-A, TSG-C and TSG-X

TR-45.2 –Developed ANSI/TIA/EIA-41 standard ANSI-41 networks have been deployed in more than 100 countries

North America 64,450,000 Caribbean and Latin America 28,620,000 Europe, Russia, Africa, Middle East 2,450,000 Asia Pacific 58,701,000 CDMA Worldwide

North America Caribbean and Latin America Russia Asia Pacific * TDMA Worldwide Israel Congo Kirghizstan UkraineUzbekistan * Guam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Myanmar, New Zealand, Northern Marianas, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam

TDMA operators and NGN Services? TDMA operators can implement GSM/GPRS and migrate to EDGE and/or UMTS (WCDMA)  EDGE and UMTS (WCDMA) are technology solutions for 3G services.  UMTS is a solution that will interoperate with EDGE 3G deployments.  3G Americas supports the production of EDGE-UMTS devices providing transparency of service for consumers.  EDGE and UMTS share the same core IP (Internet Protocol) network and are supported by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).  TDMA operators can choose to deploy a combination of GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS at various bands depending on their specific customer segmentation and spectrum strategies. (From 3G Americas website)

3GPP2/TR-45 –Develop IP-related standards Provide the infrastructure and transport to support VoIP and Multi-Media services –Network Architecture Model (NAM) for All-IP Core Network developed in TSG-S, System and Service Requirements [incl. architectures] 3GPP2 Doc SP-0037 –Established relationship with IETF Work on IP relies heavily on use of IETF protocols –Program Management Teams developing work plans and release plans to address IP-related standards development
