Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics: Re-Organizing the Role of COIA as Faculty Stewards of Intercollegiate Athletics on Our Campuses, within Conferences, & at the NCAA 12 th Annual National Meeting San Diego State University February 20-22, 2015

COIA Background Formed in 2002 as an alliance of NCAA Division IA faculty senates COIA’s “goal is to preserve and enhance the contributions athletics can make to academic life by addressing longstanding problems in college sports that undermine those contributions. University of Arkansas was founding/early member 64 member universities (mostly FBS) 42 representatives at the 12 th annual meeting in San Diego Structure – chair, steering committee, university representatives

Restructuring COIA Proposal: Steering Committee (7) Chair Student Athlete Welfare Chair Academic Integrity Chair Administration & Communications Chair 2 At-largeVice Chair

Restructuring COIA Proposal: Other The Chair and Vice Chair will be elected to 5 year terms. Elections will be held during the annual COIA meetings as needed. Committee chairs will be volunteers or recruits from the membership. Each university will appoint 1 (or 2) representative(s) to COIA’s governing body. Request that member Senates make appointments are for 3-5 years (preferably 5). – All COIA representatives not on the Steering Committee will self-identify one of the three primary standing committees on which they will serve. – All newly appointed representatives will be provided with an introductory package of information that includes COIA’s best practices white papers.
