2 Key Facts (as of Fall 2014) Idaho is a Carnegie Research University with High Research Activity with Dominant Doctoral Instructional Programs The University of Idaho is the premier research institution in the state and stands alone as the leader in graduate education Graduate and professional student enrollment: 2,307 (19.4% of the total enrollment 11,884) International graduate students: 240 (10% of the graduate students) Countries represented in student body: 68 Graduate faculty members: 600+ Master’s degrees: 88 Doctoral degrees: 31

3 Mission The College of Graduate Studies mission is to promote excellence in graduate education at all UI campuses. –COGS assists all colleges and programs in the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of graduate students. –COGS actively works to enhance the visibility of UI graduate programs domestically and internationally. –COGS works hard to increase funding for graduate students and provide equitable support across all colleges

4 Main Functions Recruitment Recruit at regional, national and international fairs. Connect prospective students to departments and faculty. Build recruitment pipelines with domestic and international partners. Support colleges in gaining access to national databases of research active undergraduate students Communicate with potential students and inspire them to apply to Idaho COGS has a dedicated graduate recruiter who communicates regularly with your program and faculty

5 Main Functions Admissions Collect and process all domestic and international graduate applications, according to standards established by the Graduate Council Conduct transcript equivalency evaluations for international students according to accepted best practices Issue immigration documents for international students who are accepted for study Communicate with students on acceptance or denial Hears appeals for admission fee waivers or other requests

6 Main Functions Graduate Student Support and Success Provide teaching assistants with financial assistance (In-state fellowship and out-of-state waiver) Monitor performance of teaching assistants Provide support for teaching assistants Conducts annual review of all graduate students progress to degree Review and approve dissertations and theses (ETD) Organize hearings for students’ petitions Advise the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) Provide workshops and training for prestigious fellowships and awards

7 Main Functions Maintain and Monitor Graduate Faculty Membership, Appointment, and Development Review and grant graduate faculty status Verify graduate committee membership Verify credentials for members serving from outside the academic institution Provide training opportunities in graduate mentorship and graduate program management

8 Graduate Faculty Membership Eligibility : 1.Hold a terminal degree, or commensurate professional experience, in the field of his/her research specialty 2.Have the recommendation of the administrator of the unit in which the faculty member has his/her primary appointment 3.Be approved by the dean of the College of Graduate Studies 4.Hold one of the following academic ranks as defined in the Faculty-Staff Handbook, Faculty, Research Faculty, Extension Faculty, Distinguished Professor, and Clinical Faculty 5.Application for graduate faculty is initiated by the department chair and routed to COGS for review and approval

9 Benefits/Responsibilities of Membership Having graduate faculty status allows you to: serve as chair of a graduate committee vote for Graduate Council representative vote on matters concerning graduate instruction, policies, and curriculum at graduate faculty meetings serve as a representative to Graduate Council serve as a departmental “director of graduate studies” (DGS) provide recognition of your expertise to other institutions and organizations

10 Graduate Council The Graduate Council is the representative body of, and is empowered to, act for the Graduate Faculty. Membership on Graduate Council –One member elected by and from the graduate faculty of each of the colleges that offer graduate degrees (ex. Law) –Three members of the Graduate Faculty appointed by the dean and approved by the provost (at-large) –Two graduate students (GPSA) –Dean of the Graduate College, who serves as chair –Associate graduate dean, who serves as vice chair. Term of service is three years

11 Role of Graduate Council The Graduate Council sets policy which is applied to all graduate programs at the university level. –Sets policy on admissions standards –Approves new program proposals –Reviews and approves program curricular changes, –Sets policy on expectations of student performance –Hears petitions from students or faculty on graduate education matters –Provides guidance to the dean of the College of Graduate Studies
