Assignments  1. Grade graphs and conclusions.  2. Introduction to Reaction Time.  3. Begin Pre-Lab of Reaction Time.

Reaction Time Lab Assignment #10  Instructions  1. Take your hand and create a “C” shape using your thumb and index finger.  2. Have your partner hold the ruler 1 inch above this hand with the 1 cm end at the bottom and the 30 cm end at the top.  3. When you are ready, drop the ruler without telling the catcher.  4. The “catcher” will try to catch the ruler as quickly as possible between their thumb and index finger. DO NOT USE YOUR WHOLE HAND TO CATCH THE RULER.  5. Look at the number directly on top of the index finger. Record this number as your reaction time.

Data Chart  Construct a data chart for your group.  USE A RULER!!! :)  Make sure each person has 8 trials and an average. Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3Trial 4 Trial 5Trial 6 Trial 7Trial 8 AVG Name

Warm-Up  Think about the Reaction Time Lab from yesterday.  1. Explain (in sentences) some ways (2-3) we could manipulate this experiment.  2. Explain what makes a good conclusion.

Learning Target  Use the Official Investigational Design to write a pre-lab, gather data for Reaction Time, and work on the post-lab.

Pre-Lab  Decide on a manipulated variable for this experiment and begin your pre-lab.  USE YOUR YELLOW SHEET TO HELP YOU!  Order is Important!  Question  Hypothesis  Variables  Materials  Procedure with Investigational Set-Up (Labeled Diagram)!

Gather your Research  Make sure to construct a neat table for your data!  USE A RULER! :)  Once done collecting data, begin writing the rest of the lab.  This is a rough draft. We will type the final drafts.

Try to finish all this in class…  Pre-Lab  Question  Hypothesis  Variables  Materials  Procedure with a Labeled Diagram!  Data Table  Graph  Results  Conclusions

Homework  Finish any parts to the lab you did not finish during class.

Warm-Up  Explain five ways to make sure you get a good grade on your Official Investigational Design science lab.

Learning Targets  Be able to use excel to complete a data table and graph.  Begin typing the rest of the Reaction Time Lab.

Tips for the Computer  1. Save EARLY! Save OFTEN!  2. Be patient. Let the computer complete a task before asking for more.  3. Technical difficulties are part of this project. If you run into a problem fix it and move on. This is not an excuse.  4. BOLD or underline each section title of the lab.

What you need to complete:  Title  Question  Hypothesis  Variables  Materials  Procedure  Investigational Set-Up (Labeled Diagram)  We will complete the Data Table and Graph together using Excel.  Results  Conclusions

Excel Instructions #1  Making a data table in Excel:  1. Open up a new page in Excel.  2. Create a data table like the one on your lab format sheet.  3. Enter your trial data in the correct places.  4. Do not include units in the boxes.

Excel Instructions #2  Finding an Average:  1. Highlight your entire table of data.  2. Find the funny looking “E” in the tool bar at the top. Click on this and a menu will pop down including the word “Average.” Click on this and your average will be calculated for you.

Excel Instructions #3  Adding borders to your table:  1. Find the cells icon on the “Home” page of Excel.  2. Choose format from the pop down menu.  3. Click on “Format cells” at the bottom of the next menu.  4. In the format cells choose “Border.”  5. Click on “Outline” and “Inside” and then click OK.  6. Your table should now be outlined.

Making a Graph  1. Highlight your entire table again.  2. Click on the “Insert” tab at the top of the page.  3. Find the “Chart” button and choose “Column” and then choose one of the options.  4. Now you should have a graph.  5. To label your graph, click on the “Layout” tab and look for “Chart Titles” and “Axis Titles” to complete your labels.
