What’s Up with Mathematics 2010 and Beyond? Educational Service District 113 Kathy Dornhecker, Regional Mathematics Coordinator Cheryl Vance, Literacy, Mathematics and Science Content Specialist

Documents used in this session: Changes for 2010 and Beyond Item Specifications (3-8)

Turn to Page 4 What’s a “big” change you noticed? Page 5 Item and Point Totals Look at your grade level Item Types Look at all three types Questions??

Page 8 Pilot Item 2010 “The Standard Algorithm” for regrouping Page 9 Pilot Item 2010 “The Standard Algorithm” for multiplication Page 10 Pilot Item 2010 “The Standard Algorithm” for division Turn to an elbow buddy, share thoughts and implications for your teaching

Get into groups of 3-4 Turn to page 14 and complete the item on your own As a group, answer these questions related to the item: 1. What vocabulary is crucial for success on this item? (highlight) 2. What is the PE? Find it in the Test & Item Specs document. 3. Bold vs Italics (Test & Item Specs) 4. Student must fill in the bubble.

Repeat the previous process for your remaining grade level items. Answer these questions related to this item: 1. What vocabulary is crucial for success on this item? (highlight) 2. What is the PE? Find it in the Test & Item Specs document. 3. Bold vs Italics (Test & Item Specs)

Fill in the bubble for multiple choice Write the answer on the line for a completion problem Use words, numbers or pictures for 2 point problems

What did you notice???? Important new learnings What needs to be shared with others at your building How will this inform your practice?

Test Development Guidelines Test & Item Specs Document p.3-7

Directions: p. 3-7 Read over general considerations. Pair up and share important information that would be helpful to prepare students for the MSP

More Information on the guidelines Items use language targeted to the previous grade level or lower readability, except for required mathematics terms listed in this document. Directions with multiple requirements will be organized with bullets. Letters used as variables are always italicized. The responses “All of the above” and “None of the above” will not be used.

More…… Tools may include rulers, pattern blocks, base ten blocks, geoboards, tiles, cubes, and other manipulative that would not provide an answer directly to students. Make sure students are familiar with the tools. Do not pull them out on test day for the first time. If an answer on the line is negated by the information or numbers in the space for writing, then the number on the line is the answer. This means that students’ drawings and written responses must match the answer on the line, otherwise a scorer has to choose and they cannot choose which answer is correct.

Test Organization Third Grade p. 9 Fourth Grade p.22 Fifth Grade p. 34 Sixth p. 10 Look at the organization for your level Discuss the page with others at your table

Cognitive Complexity

Fourth Grade- Item Level: ___ Eighth Grade- Item Level: ___

MSP Item Specifications Performance Expectations that will be assessed at the state level appear in BOLD TEXT The remaining PEs which appear in italicized text, should be taught and assessed at the classroom level

Vocabulary

Data Displays, Computational Guidelines, Mathematical Symbols, Measurement

Time for You!!! Highlight vocabulary that you need to focus on this spring Read through your grade level PEs and highlight classroom based assessment items

Changes for 2010 and Beyond

Changes for 2010 and Beyond Completion Items

Only numerical answers – labels (if needed) will be given

Changes for 2010 and Beyond  The item specifications were changed in DECEMBER to include the testing of standard algorithms Standard algorithm questions are only being piloted this spring

MSP Item Specifications

MSP Test Specifications Items will include Multiple Choice, Completion, and Short Answer

Item Specifications available at: mSpec.aspx mSpec.aspx Lessons learned put link here.

Assessment High School High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) The HSPE will assess the GLEs in 2010 In 2011, the HSPE will assess the new content standards and move to End-of-Course (EOC) assessments for Algebra 1 and Geometry Third year credit options: Algebra 2, CTE aligned to Algebra 2, or a waiver Completion items and items assessing the new content standards will be piloted on the spring 2010 assessment

Assessment High School High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) Students will take the EOC at the time they complete the course (i.e. – 8 th grade algebra students would take the Algebra EOC in 8 th grade) 6 th -8 th graders taking an EOC will also take the MSP for their respective grade level How this will impact AYP formulas for high school has not been decided During 2011, only the spring EOC test window will be available for students; starting in 2012, there will be a winter and spring test window to accommodate block schedules
