1 G.W. CARVER MIDDLE EOC MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP October 25, 2017

2 AGENDA Introduction – Distribution of handouts What about the FSA?
Information about the EOC What is the EOC? What is tested? When is it? What does it cover? How is it graded? Types of questions Test details School EOC strategies and resources Ways parents can help students for the EOC. List of helpful websites Questions Evaluation

3 Will the students also have to take the FSA?
The students taking the EOC in Geometry or Algebra 1 will not have to take the math part of the FSA.

4 End of Course (EOC) What is being tested in the EOC? What is the EOC?
The Florida EOC Assessment is designed to measure student achievement of the Mathematical Practices State Standards for specific high-school level courses, as outlined in their course descriptions and are for the purpose of increasing student achievement and improving college and career readiness. In Mathematics, it currently exists for Algebra 1 and Geometry. What is being tested in the EOC? The EOC assesses the ability of students to apply math skills to real world problems based on the Mathematical Practices benchmarks.

When is it? ALGEBRA I EOC – April 16-May 11, 2018 GEOMETRY EOC – April 16-May 11, 2018 This is a computer-based evaluation!

11 REQUIREMENT: Florida Senate bill 1076 requires that the EOC assessment results make up 30 percent of all students’ final course grades for Algebra and Geometry. Students must earn a passing grade in a course with a 30 percent calculation applied in order to earn high school credit. For example: your final grade in Geometry is a B and you earn a level 2 on the Geometry EOC. Your grade is the following: (B x.70) + (D x.30) (3 x .70) + (1 x .30) 2.4 = C EOC Score Grade assigned for 30% calculation 5 or 4 A 3 B 2 or 1 D

12 Cognitive Complexity Each item is reviewed to determine its cognitive complexity. Each benchmark may have items written to any of the three levels: low, moderate, or high. For both the Geometry and Algebra 1 EOC’s, the target range for the percentage of points by cognitive complexity level for each is the following: Low Level: % Moderate Level: % High Level: %

13 Low Complexity Solving a one–step problem.
Items typically specify what the student is to do, which is often to carry out a procedure that can be performed mechanically. Solving a one–step problem. Recalling or recognizing a fact, term, or property. Retrieving information from a graph, table, or figure.

14 Moderate Complexity The students are expected to decide what to do and to bring together their knowledge from various domains. Solving a problem requiring multiple operations. Extending an algebraic or geometric pattern. Explaining steps of a solution.

15 High complexity Students must engage in more abstract reasoning, planning, analyzing, and creative thoughts. Solving real life problems requiring multiple steps. Describing, comparing, and contrasting solution methods. Formulating an original problem, given a situation. Analyzing or producing a deductive argument.

19 Prior Knowledge Items may require the student to apply mathematical knowledge described in Mathematical Practices benchmarks from lower grades; however, the benchmarks from lower grades will not be assessed in isolation.
