Animal Farm: Characters Haag/Marcason

Napoleon: Cheat Sheet Large black and white boar Doesn’t talk much but very persuasive Overthrows snowball Takes over Animal Farm

Napoleon Napoleon is one of the more powerful pigs from the beginning of the Rebellion He and Snowball debate the most and never agree on anything that should happen in regards to the farm The only thing they DID agree on was that pigs should get the milk and apples “to keep them healthy” Napoleon lies, uses propaganda, and fear to control the other animals

Napoleon’s Changes No Sunday meeting/debates Pigs live in the farm house Animals can sleep on beds without sheets Animals shouldn’t drink alcohol to excess Animals can kill other animals if they have cause Trading with humans but only for things they cannot produce on the farm like nails Animals who walk on two legs are better Starts wearing clothes and smoking from a pipe – he also wears a bowler hat Banned The Beasts of England song

Snowball: Cheat Sheet The leader of the Rebellion Truly believes in Animalism Teaches Animalism to the other aniamls Is run off the farm by Napoleon’s dogs

Snowball Snowball and Napoleon bumped heads right from the beginning of the Rebellion once Mr. Jones was gone Snowball wanted to build a windmill to help increase production Overall goal was to have shortened work weeks and more food for everyone Napoleon did not want this because if the animals had more free time they would be harder to control Napoleon makes Snowball a scapegoat for all the bad things that happen on Animal Farm even though Snowball never returns to the farm once he is run off.

Napoleon’s Lies About Snowball He is working for Mr. Jones He is hiding on Fredrick’s farm He is hiding on Pilkington’s farm He destroyed the first windmill He sneaks onto the farm to steal milk, food, and other supplies He sabotages the farm by causing mischief at night He never fought for Animal Farm He never received a medal of honor He has spies living on the farm

Squealer Napoleon’s right hand man pig Spreads the propaganda and lies to the other animals Is responsible for writing the commandments

Squealer Squealer works closely with Napoleon and benefits from this relationship He tells dramatic lies to convince the animals that Napoleon is taking care of them Cries when he announced that Boxer died at the “vet” Announces fake production increases to motivate animals Changes the Commandments at night when the other animals are sleep Then convinces them that they didn’t remember the rule correctly Helps spread lies and rumors about Snowball

Boxer: Cheat Sheet Strongest animal on the farm Other animals looked up to him Was not very intelligent, but dedicated worker “I will work harder” “Napoleon is always right”

Boxer Boxer strongly believes in Animalism which motivates him to work as hard as he can He consistently wakes up earlier than the other animals to do extra work by himself Other animals look up to him as inspiration to work harder which is why he is a threat to Napoleon Towards the end of the book Boxer does start to question Napoleon but ends up believing the propaganda he is told Boxer is betrayed by Napoleon in the end Boxer is weak from being underfed and overworked. He collapses while working on his own. Napoleon promises the other animals that he is sending Boxer to a vet to help him recover and he will receive the best care imaginable When the van comes to pick him up Benjamin says the van as “Horse Slaughterer” written on the truck

Clover Mare (female horse) on the farm Works closely with Boxer and Benjamin Questions what Napoleon says Has Muriel read the Commandments when she thinks Napoleon/Squealer is lying

Benjamin Old donkey that lives on the farm Knows from the beginning that life goes in circles – think of how the book ends Does not want to get involved by reading the commandments to the other animals Works closely with Boxer and Clover but doesn’t push himself

Mollie Pretty white horse Reluctantly follows the new rules after the Rebellion Does not work as hard as the other animals Is selfish and shallow Runs away from the farm to become a carriage horse

The Sheep Are not smart and follow whatever Squealer and Napoleon tell them to do “Four legs good, two legs bad” Four legs good, two legs better”

Moses Preaches to the other animals about Sugarcandy Mountain Says if they work hard and are loyal they will reach Sugarcandy Mountain when they pass away

Old Major The creator of Animalism In the first chapter preaches about how evil and selfish man is Teaches the animals The Beasts of England song to motivate them to rebel Dies in his sleep in the beginning of the book and never actually sees the Rebellion take place
