Animal Farm Group #1

Character traits The Dogs- The 9 dogs follow Napoleon and scare off and attack (if need be) any person who opposes him. The dogs are ferocious and will stop at nothing to be loyal to Napoleon. They are a primary reason why Napoleon holds onto his power and is able to get things that he wants Sheep- They are easily tricked yet very loyal spirit of the common people during this time. They remain loyal to Napoleon and say “Four legs good, two legs bad!” It later becomes "Four legs good, two legs better! Mollie- The vain mare who pulls the carriage for Mr. Jones. Craves the attention from humans so is having a hard time at animal farm. Moses- A calm raven who spreads tales of a Sugarcandy Mountain, a paradise for animals when they die. Orwell uses this character to explore how communism exploits religion as "something to pacify the oppressed” Benjamin- The old donkey who finds no inspiration in the rebellion. Feels that regardless of who is in charge life will not get better. He seems the most aware of the situation on the farm, but least motivated to act against the pigs. Boxer-Boxer is a very helpful, but yet stupid and passive horse. He is the strongest animal on Animal Farm, but yet worships/praises Napoleon. He often says "Napoleon is always right." Similar to to working class "I will work harder.” Snowball-Snowball was a happy and lively boar exiled by the ferocious Napoleon. He was also trying to be a leader of Animal Farm. Once he is exiled he is blamed for all the wrongdoings of the farm.(Napoleon's lies) He is very similar to Leon Trotsky. (Second in command) Napoleon-Napoleon is a power hungry dictator who now, runs Animal Farm. He is so vicious that he actually executes the Animals that try to or think about rebelling against him. He did this despite the fact that it was in the sixth commandment to not kill any other animal. It read "No animal shall kill any other animal." (pg.91) Napoleon's counterpart in the Russian revolution was Joseph Stalin. He wants total power.

Characters in animal farm Clover- Clover is a middle aged mare (horse) who is loyal like Boxer. However, she cannot express her opinions very well because she has difficulty speaking and reading. She is outraged at what has happened with all the death and destruction in Animal Farm. She also points out that one of the commandments said that the pigs living on Animal Farm could not sleep in beds. They however, changed the commandment to "Animals cannot sleep on beds with sheets.” Squealer-Squealer is a boar who only looks out for the good of the pigs. He is very good at manipulation and persuasion. (Always has a way of getting around the rules.) He tries to make the Farm feel as if they are all together as a unit. He does this by saying things like "Surely comrades, you don't want Jones back?” Old major- Old Major is a smart visionary who has the idea of overthrowing the farm in the first place. (Because of him the animals created Animal Farm.) When giving his speech about overthrowing Jones' Farm (after he had his dream0, he states "Only get rid of Man, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Almost overnight we could become rich and free. What then must we do? Why, work night and day, body and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! That is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion!"

The characters counterparts -Napoleon, the pig, symbolizes Joseph Stalin who was the second leader of the Soviet Union. -Stalin overthrew Leo Trotsky, who was later named a traitor and exiled from his country, just like snowball, his counter part, had been from Animal Farm. -Squealer, the loud-mouthed pig represents the Russian media -because his is the one who advertises Napoleons idea to the rest of the farm animals just like the media would have done for the people -Boxer, the workhorse, represents the working class -Because he does the most work on the farm and is always trying to work harder to please Napoleon, just like the working class of the time Benjamin represents the group of people who -These people knew what the Russian government was doing but they didn’t do anything to stop it -The dogs of Napoleon were also shown to symbolize the military -Because they were very aggressive and never left Napoleon's side. Moses represents religion -evident because he is always spreading stories of a mythical land called “sugar candy mountain,” -suppose to be a land where animals had a better life -also the Soviet Union opposed religion which is shown in how the pigs never allowed Moses into their meetings and tried to stay clear of him Clover represents the people who lived before the time of the Russian Revolution and were able to realize that the government was lying to the people about their success.

counterparts -Mr. Jones, the original owner of Animal Farm, symbolizes the last czar, or emperor, of Russia. -In both the story and history this character is overthrown by the rebellion of the people. The sheep- -when someone calls you a sheep they are referring to the fact that you don’t have a mind of your own. -which is why Orwell uses sheep to symbolize the people during the Russian revolution who were easily swayed by the propaganda spread. Mollie- represents the Russian Middle class, or bourgeois. -they were the ones who fled Russia for the West when told they needed to give up their luxuries, like Mollie’s sugar and ribbon, in order to better the revolution, Old Major represents both Karl Marx and Vladimir Ilych Lenin -He serves as the source of the ideals that the animals continue to uphold even after their pig leaders have betrayed them. -Karl Marx was a German political economist, and Vladimir Ilych Lenin, the Russian revolutionary leader.

Point of view Animal Farm is told from a third person point of view, specifically one that has a limited omniscience. The third person point of view is important because it allows Orwell to take on the tone of the fable and be able to add interesting views of characters' thoughts.

Significance of point of view The novel is told in third person with frequent quotes throughout so that no bias is established and that one knows what is going on with all of the animals on Animal Farm.

How it represents a fable fable- short, simple story, usually with animals as characters, designed to teach a moral truth Fables are written to teach a moral truth, and Animal Farm represents a few. -Animal Farm teaches a moral truth that all things are created equally, although all things are not treated equally. -also teaches that too much power can be bad (Napoleon took over the whole farm with his power)

Pg 134

How it’s a satire satire- a story that attacks a serious event by displaying it in a ridiculous light. George Orwell made Animal Farm a satire The story is a representation of the Russian Revolution- made in a funny way --- Stalin and Trotsky are made into pigs -seems ridiculous for pigs to be fighting over power

How it’s an allegory allegory- a narrative that can be read on more than one level, in which a character, idea, or event also stands for something else Animal Farm is definitely an allegory for many reasons. -a child can read it, and understand the story as if it was just a fable/story about animals -an adult can read the same story, but understand something totally different. They would see it as a representation of the Russian Revolution

Symbolism in Animal farm The windmill represents the power of the pigs. It shows that the pigs have the ability to manipulate the other animals. The pigs do not help the animals while building the windmill. The animals work very long hours and receiving little food while the pigs are eating all of it. The flag symbolizes the Soviet Union's flag during the Russian Revolution. it's color represents fields of England horn and hoof convey the future Republic of Animals animal's freedom and hope

symbolism The whip Napoleon carries symbolizes the return of humans' behavior back to the farm. The whip represented all the bad things the animals tried to get rid of, but its back only with a different master. The barn portrays a memory of a Communist nation. The seven commandments were inside of the barn and were constantly changed to manipulate the animals Most of the animals did not remember their earliest leaders well. Made the animals easier to manipulate.
